I meant "not meant for racing," smart-aleck. :P

No, J-553 is most likely now destined for the automotive equivalent of a safe-deposit box.

I think you better rethink that comment about ROAD GOING Duesenberg. If you think that car is going to be road going you are delusional.

We were at, or had someone at, all the auctions plus the Blackhawk Expo, and saw some silly prices being paid for junk, as well as some nice stuff. I was personally at Christies, Bonhams, RM Friday and Saturday and Sunday, and the Gooding sale Sunday after the Concours. The best stuff was at Gooding, and the RM Saturday sale. Hell of a deal.

I think I said I ran into Randy Ema.

The Geo emblem is a globe, because the car itself is so slow that you can actually feel the world turn underneath you...

Regardless of what you think of J-553, it is, I believe, the most expensive roadgoing Duesenberg (Mormon Meteor doesn't count) ever sold at auction. The previous record stood, I believe, at $2.75 million for J-534, paid in January 2005.

True... but it's 4.4M worth of Ugly whereas my Geo is only $500 worth of ugly. Right Chris?

I'd take it and love it someone would give me an ugly car like that or even at $500, rather than the G G G Geo!

J-340 was at the Kruse Museum, on display, when I visited in late July. She had a (Meadow Brook?) Concours license plate on the front with Robert Phelps listed as the owner.

Well, speaking of the Murphy CC at Kruse, J-340, that car was supposedly sold at the Kruse aution in Naples Florida earlier this year. Why is it back on the block so soon? Did it really change ownership there at Naples? Anyone know the details?
Thanks, Joel

Patience, grasshopper...

I know A.J. was completely and utterly wrong as far as bid goes (haha), but the object of the contest was to name the top seller of the three cars and guess the winning bid...and he did. (Poet and don't know it.)

There's nothing spectacular enough at Kruse (sorry, folks, as nuts about Duesenbergs as I am, Murphy Convertible Coupes aren't that uncommon on the big auction scene).

As I've said before, if anyone hears of an Auburn or Cord of interest coming up for auction, I'd like to hear about it.

I'm not sure what it means to be wrong by 100% and still win. I think a couple of bidders must have read my post about what was "right" with this car and gotten carried away.

In any event the market continues to be very strong for the very special cars.

You're right about De Dion, we bought it.

You are also close on the Mars town car, which is black now, or some dark color. We passed on that car.

Two different Ferrari Long Wheelbase California specials went for almost five million each. One was a no sale, one was not.

There was a Christies sale Friday, a Bonham sale Saturday morning, and RM sale Saturday evening, and a Gooding. RM and Gooding had a Sunday sale, after the concours.

First word out of Monterey is that J-553 sold for $4 million...not sure if that was with commission or not, awaiting official results from RM.

Also: according to news report deDion went for $3.52 million.

I'll wait for official results before declaring the winner--don't want any controversy like last time... :D

P.S. Highest sale of weekend, just FYI: the late Ann Klein's 4-1/2-Liter Blower Bentley for a mind-boggling $4.51 million. There's money in them thar hills...er, cliffs.

A shame Mike Regalia is no longer working for the Nethercutt Collection...it would have been nice to see that car go into the permanent collection, for all to enjoy right alongside the Twenty Grand and the Orello Packard, all free of charge. It certainly has enough style, luxury, performance, and history to justify a space in the Museum, if not at San Sylmar.

However, as nice as the 250 GT/L is...I think if I could own any of the three, it would be the DeDion. Significant Js pop up at auction every one to two years, but how often do you have a chance to buy THE OLDEST RUNNING CAR ON EARTH?

That and I just LOVE saying "deDion."

He was a truly great collector, he had a 46 Chevy pick up that he drove daily. He had a huge collection of tools and motorcycles also. His automotive vision may have been an important segment in the hobby, possibly a museum if he had lived.
He had a Chrysler Airflow that he was proud of. Anything that he was associated with was blessed. A great Actor with a beach house and a beautiful wife, but I wish she had not split up his collection.
The cars live on in his memory. And this Ferrari surely proves its heritage.

It was 2.31 million (with/without commission? clarification anyone?)

From AP:

"I couldn't be happier for the car and the legacy of Steve McQueen," seller Mike Regalia, who restores cars, said in a telephone interview. "Without his ownership, it never would have received this value."

(me)
At a sale price that almost cracked double the high estimate, Mr. Regalia was probably doing cartwheels down the Pacific Coast Highway.

Now...onward to the other auctions!

The Mar's Duesenberg has all the ingredients for a big big number. Namely:

1. Late car
2. Blown
3. Stylish one off body
4. Known history
5. Celebrity first owner

I'm thinking it will do as well as the Bauer car. I'll say 2.4.

"Antique Cars Collector Edition", whatever that is, thinks that the Duesenberg had an an "L" (flathead) engine. Also that 36 of them were made. Thus is misinformation spread. End of lecture for today.

The De Dion estimate came off CNN, which stated "Gooding & Company says the car is estimated to sell between..." No mention was made of reserve or otherwise. Cheap-a%$ that I am, I'm waiting for their catalog to be put online free. :D

To clarify, the winner has to guess A) the top-selling car and B) what price it will sell for. Therefore I'm taking Joel's bid as the De Dion at $2.34 million and balinwire's as the Duesenberg at $1.7 million.

I am not bidding because I don't want to win my own contest. :)

Fantasy Bidding #3: Monterey Madness was created by Chris Summers
There are three highly significant cars being offered for sale by different auction houses during Car Week at Monterey next month:

1884 DE DION BOUTON ET TREPARDOUX--"The World's Oldest Running Automobile." Offered by Gooding & Company. A screaming metal deathtrap but a very cool screaming metal deathtrap. Their estimate is between $1,500,000 and $2,000,000.

1935 DUESENBERG MODEL SJ BOHMAN & SCHWARTZ TOWN CAR--J-553/2582. Offered by RM Auctions. Designed by Herb Newport for Mae West, who turned it down, and was instead built for candy heiress Ethel Mars. Ownership history includes John Troka, Bill Harrah, Richard Dicker, Blackhawk Collection, and Mark Smith. Estimate: $2,300,000-$3,200,000

1963 FERRARI 250 GT BERLINETTA LUSSO--Originally owned by Steve McQueen. Offered by Christie's. Restored by Mike Regalia with documented history and one of the few McQueen cars on the market. Estimate: $800,00-$1,200,000

Soooo...

We have before us a priceless relic of history, a supercharged Duesenberg with a one-of-a-kind body, and a genuine Steve McQueen Ferrari.

This time around, pick A) THE CAR YOU THINK WILL SELL FOR THE MOST MONEY and B) HOW MUCH YOU THINK IT WILL SELL FOR (WITH COMMISSION). The person who guesses the correct car and the amount closest to the winning bid WITH COMMISSION wins my famous hearty digital handshake.

Remember...estimates aren't always gospel.
