We were at Peterson in May and didn't see anything like this car. Must have been changed much as Randy says. How would you like to fit those doors!!!

That would explain why the price was so cheap.

That is a great video!

Can anybody from LA tell us if the car is on display at the Petersen yet?

Btw, 132k seems like a really reasonable price for such a well known 1930s custom.

You can see what the car looks like now (at least last year when it was auctioned) by going here:

www.rmauctions.com/AuctionResult ... Code=BC06#

and sliding down and selecting "topper car" for photos.

personally, I liked it when it was more "cord" like.

The car is now owned by the Petersen Automotive Museum, and still has the trailer.

Quote, "Most people assumed that the good looking car in Topper was a modified Cord- thanks to the squarish bonnett, supercharger pipes, and pontoon fenders- but it was actually a Buick. That's Constance Bennett and Cary Grant pretending slumber before an appreciative crowd of extras.

Yes, this car still exists with a variation on the front grille in a california collection. I have many photos of this car & the late rones when gilmore oil co. owned it. There was also a matching teardrop trailer with loud speakers. I actually have one photo of the gilmore lion seated in it. The original script called for an auburn or cord type vehicle but they were folded up by the time of filming. The chassis was a 1937 or 1938 Buick.
Cordially,
Stan

There was a mention of the Topper car in another posting. There was no picture, so this is a view of the Topper car; it would look just like a Sportsman?s Cabriolet on a quick view in 1936.

The pontoon fenders and the rear hinge doors, outside exaust, slanted windshield, fog-kings, trailing edge of hood, lack of running boards and chrome bumpers are very similar. The rear tail may act as a vertical stabilizer at high speeds. They didn't bother with disappearing headlights. :D

Body is by Bohman & Schwartz, chassis is a 1936 Buick. The same year as the Cord debut.

Does anyone have any information when it was built and if it exists any longer?
