Listed in the engineering changes on 9/21/36 is a note stating that they started filling these areas with cotton and overspraying them with undercoating as a way of reducing dust coming into the car as they had a number of complaints on this subject.

I'm known all over the world in different forums for my attention to details and in the Arabian Horse World too. Its the small details that make something stand out from all the others. For now it stays in place but it will be pictured very well during the restoration of this area. Thanks again for the help...

Hello:

Since we know that this was an intermittent practice of the Cord factory based upon anecdotal evidence, I'm guessing you would be ok either way. Speaking for myself, I do appreciate seeing things like this because is speaks volumes about the restorer and their attention to detail.

Thank you for the responce Mark. Is this cotton material something I need to leave there ans just spray with some undercoating or should I remove it completely and not replace it. I can go either way at this point. Thanks for the help too and to others answering. Thanks also. Some of the answers were funny but far from helpful. Still fun to read anyway... <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->

I love these answers! How about this one: The Cord factory used a rough cotton to stuff areas at the base of the firewall in the corners. This was either done as sound proofing, leak proofing or simply batting to fill voids prior to applying undercoating in those areas to keep it from dripping for days after application.

Mike , Thanks for the plug to buy parts. Sorry to say I have plenty of inventory of original mouse nests from many past purchases. Not a big seller. Now , there are some other items that I could use like an 812 cabriolet.

My car, 2288H, has the same material, in the same places, sealed with undercoating.

I have a article that says that there were complaints of air leaks by owners and the factory used cotton to plug up these openings. Don't remember where I read it but could find it if anyone would like.

Well from the answers it seems like nobody knows if this was something installed from the factory or an aftermarket thought to keep the road salts and dirt out of this area. Its clearly been undercoated over this cotton like material. Looks almost like someone jusy picked cotton from the fields and stuffed in down in that area. then sparayed undercoating on that and the slanted area of the firewall. This area is way back from the Horn relay mounting area on the passenger side. Its also on the drivers side too.

Hi,

It may be from the dreaded "radioactive dioxin asbestos mouse." Call the EPA, National Guard, United Nations, and ASPCA.

Or just toss it out. :D :D :D

Well yesterday as I was cleaning off the road grime that collected against the sub frame and the firewall mounting area way on the corners I found something odd under what appears to be sprayed on undercoating. I found I think some cotton that was pushed into the opening under the eadge of the frame and the slopped firewall at the extremem edages. I did not pull it all out till I know more about what it is. Any ideas. I might be able to post a pic but really never have been good with pics and this site. I can take nice pics with my camera or cel phone but getting them here has always been a mess. Thanks for any help in telling me what I may have found.
