Hi,

In the next six weeks or so I expect to have 1509A's shift wiring installed. This animation will be INVALUABLE to me as I try to get the Old Lady to shift for the first time since 1950!

Tom--my most sincere thanks for this animation. My car-work partner and I will be studying it intensely as we prepare for that first shift!

THANK YOU so VERY much!

Sincerely,

--Tom

I am also interested to hear if anyone has used the simulation to debug problems with a car. It would be great to hear how it worked out for you.

Tom, nice job with that!
I hope it helps people understand the system.
There are quite a few things in the Cord shift system that always need to be addressed when working on them. It seems that it's always the same problems that occur and they can be easy to deal with most of the time.
I think Tom's program can take some of some of the mystery out of how it all works, and from that, one could be more confident in tackling a problem.
I would be glad to help also if anyone has a question with a shift problem.

Thanks for your efforts Tom!

Thank you for your note. The program was a bit of work, but mostly because I am learning to program and it is all new to me.

Regarding adding the shift switch... It can be done, but I will need close up shots of the switches from various angles. This will let me know how to display them. Pictures of the terminals where the wires attach would be great. If anyone has these switches disassembled and could take pictures, please post to this thread.

Hi Tom,
Here are some photos of a nearly perfect original switch I have, but it's had the wires replaced some time ago. The colours are close but not completely correct.
Stan Gilliland had a really good wiring diagram made up years ago, and you can match these pics with his dia to get colours for the wiring, and figure out the switching logic.
Man those old guys were smart eh! I love this stuff.

Hi Tom,
Fantastic job you have done!
I think you have a pretty good understanding of the Cord trans!
They are an engineering work of art, and unfortunately people really are scared of working on one or owning one just because of the trans.
In truth, it's one of the best parts of the car!
That must have been quite a bit of work putting this program together.
Quick question- would it be a future update to include the hand operated shift switch action into the animation?
Many thanks,
Don

Hi,

Thanks for your note. I was unsure of the problem but I am glad it is resolved... I think that perhaps the vacuum and atmosphere should have been different colors. I might look at this in the future. It might be a bit easier to understand (?).

Springs to center the cross shaft are hard to draw. After a while it just makes the drawing busy. I tried to draw springs in the solenoids and the result is not great.

Cheers,
Tom Hussey

I am very sorry about things I wrote about the vacuum distributor. The diagram is correct. <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt=":oops:" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: -->

The fault is on my car. I put there the old vacuum pipes, but they have opposite direction (if you change the wires to solenoids, the system works the same).

I?m not sure, if I can understand the scheme well. But I think, that your valves are bad created. The whole system is vacuumed all the time, and the solenoids opens the atmosphere and closes the vacuum.
I have put the vacuum distributor schema into my picturegallery.

Yuo have to have springs in both sides of the cross shift cylinder, because of you need something that keeps this cylinder in the middle position.

Transmission controls simulation was created by T_Hussey
Hi,

Today I would like to share with you a computer program I wrote simulating the electrical and pneumatic controls of the 810/12 transmission. I notice many articles in our newsletters going back decades surrounding the "electric hand" transmission. While looking for a car to purchase, it is my goal to understand as much as possible about the design. The transmission control is a fascinating part of this unique car and I decided to model the components to gain that knowledge.

The program has on screen control buttons to select gears and clutch state. It responds by displaying and moving the simulated switches and mechanism. There are indications of the expected voltage present on each of the terminals. I believe the program will help both in understanding the system and in debug of problems.

The program runs under Windows 95 or better, and has been tested on a desktop with XP and a Netbook with Windows 7 starter. The program is free to club members. You can download it at:

smtp.xplornet.com/u/[email protected]/CordTrans.exe

Please understand that while I have made every effort to ensure the correctness of the simulation, we depend on your feedback should you find any errors.

I want to thank Dan DiTullio and Josh Malks for their assistance putting this together. I hope you will find it of use. There is a screen shot from the program below.

Regards,
Tom Hussey
