I had the problem that with my custom beverly project, the Steeringcollumn was of a Westchester and therefore to short, what i did was, i organized a original Custom Beverly steeringjackettube ( which is longer, thanks Henry for instruction and tube ) cut the steering collumn and filled in the additional length with a joint sleeve piece that is fitting snuggly and secured by two setscrews on each end, now why should that interest you ? This way i can extract the Steeringbox without taking of the Steering Wheel, collumn and exhaustcollector.
This solution will not work for you now, but would next time, if you ever need to work on it. Not that i urge you towards that idea to perform on your 'box but is surley a benefit from my extension that was needed. By the way, i did not weld, because welding is allways a problem to get it absolutley straight without turning on a lathe. Best regards Philipp

Thanks, Mario. I knew it was a possibility that the worm was pressed on, but I guess I was still hoping for an easier solution. I don't expect to have to trouble you for pictures, but I appreciate the offer.

Brad, the worm is pressed fit to the steering shaft (no way you can remove the steering box without the steering shaft, i.e. you have to remove from the car the steering box with the shaft as one unit. If you would like some pictures please pm me (I have done it on two cars). Mario

Thanks, George.
I assume that when I take the cover off I'll find a nut holding the worm on the steering shaft? Anyway I'll go ahead and take the cover off and hopefully it will be obvious how to proceed.

Brad; The Cord uses the Gemmer model 330 with stradle mounted bearing. It is
similar to Chrysler Airflow.. Remove the 4 screws on the
worm cover to take apart. Find an old Motors Manual to repair and adjust. See also Cord service bulleton 810 no. 22.

How to separate the shaft from the steering box? was created by BradC
Can anyone tell me how to remove the steering (column) shaft from the steering box on my '37 Westchester? The shaft has a collar a couple of inches from the box, with a spring between the collar and housing which holds a dust seal against the housing. I've moved the collar and spring assembly away from the steering box, and I don't see any kind of retaining mechanism, but the box seems to be rigidly attached to the shaft.
Thanks,
Brad
