Replied by Pat Leahy on topic rear main seal
There is no real rear main seal in this engine. Any oil that works past the babbit bearing falls in a groove in the bearing housing and out a brass tube into the pan. There should be a flat cork strip that covers the hump of the bearing housing and pan gasket. I use a gasket sealer called "Right Stuf" to seal. I install timing cover first, then the pan. Try to torque bolts equally and make sure the lip of the pan is flat. I surface this area with a belt sander to reveal high or low spot and correct with a hammer and dolly. I have more problem with the il level sender leaking than the pan.

Need help with installation of rear main seal. My gasket set has a cork strip about 81/2in long but not sure how it works. There was no seal of any kind when I disassembled engine. Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks
