Well, I had a pretty strong idea that this topic had been discussed before! Looks like it is unanimous. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks all for helping the helpless.

Check out my posting on this topic last November 14 and the resulting responses from Club members. The "handle droop" was apparently a design flaw right from the start. Even if you could start with all new handles and new lock/latch mechanisms you'd have all four handles angled down. The only satisfactory solution is the heat and twist process. And it's not that difficult to do with a gas torch, a vise, and a Crescent wrench.

Guess I may not have been clear on the droop. The droop occurs in that the internal mechanism that holds the door handle shaft causes a slight downward angle but it is not loose. The handles are always angled (drooped) downward a bit but are firm in their place.

How about some sort of spring to hold them up? That's what Chevrolet did with its drooping door handles.

My wife has a 41 chevrolet pickup that has door handles that droop. I ordered spring assemblies to hold them up. I have not installed them yet, but when I do, I will see if they will also work on a Cord.

The heat and twist method has been used for 60 years so I think it qualifies as period correct :-).

Like I said if the handle only droops when the door is closed, that means the actual door catch is not being totally released when the door is closed. That is the part you need to look at.

Ken,

I had already pull the latches out, cleaned and re- greased them. They look good. The door handles droop when the doors are closed. There are several screws that hold the latches in place and I have played with them a bit as it looks like that may be the key but I haven't had much luck.

Something is either worn or your latch is not able extend all the way out when the is closed. Or does it droop even when the door is not closed? If that is so something is definitely worn. In that case you will need to take out the latch assembly and figure out what is worn and then how to fix and reassemble.
My 2 cents

Lee,

I have heard about heating and twisting but the originals weren't done that way so I am curious how to do adjust the handles the way Cord did it.

I am installing replacement exterior door handles. They droop and are not positioned horizontially. How are they to be adjusted? Thanks
