The first article in a series about the Cord's wheel/drum/hub system will appear in our Newsletter issue 2008-3, to be mailed in late April.

And yes, hubs have cracked and split. But remember that Cords have been driven millions of miles of the past 72 years. (Really --- do the arithmetic.) A small number of hubs have failed. And the hub and wheel problems are inter-related.

The articles will explore the issues in detail.

I know about cracked wheel rims but didn't know about a hub problem. What happens when the hub fails? Do they need to be NDI often? Or better to replace with modern hubs?

I guess he has enough broken wheels to study?

One of our club members, a retired engineer, is engaged in extensive research on the issues of cracking Cord wheels and breaking Cord hubs. Preliminary data indicates that the problems are related.

We have access to the assistance of several metallurgical engineers, who can examine failed hubs and give professional opinions on the causes. To do this right, we need several samples of failed hubs.

If you have a broken hub --- both parts --- please contact me by sending a private e-mail from the button below. Thanks for your help with this important safety issue.
