Hi Marc,

Since you are already a club member you've got the first thing right. Now that you own a real Cord (810/812) you've got the second item right.

I would recommend you get ahold of the membership secretary and get a copy of the Cord transmission manual. For now you can skip over reading all about rebuilding the transmission and look over appendix D on troubleshooting and setting up the adjustments.

After 40 years of sitting there could be several things that have gone wrong, mostly from sitting. But it seams the problem is centered around the cross shift not moving to the left properly. You start by pulling off the front bumper and transmission cover to see what is going on. Try shifing into first or reverse while someone is watching up front to see it the mechinism is moving over to the left.

If it moves the next place to check would be the cross shift switch.

If it doesn't move the problem could be in th column switch, the solinoid bank or the cross shift itself.

Rather then writing the book, get a copy of the transmission book so you have a better undersatnding of the parts involved and then look a little closer at what's it's actually doing (or not doing) and we can get you going in the right direction.

In the mean time don't park anywhere you have to back up.

CORDially,
Jim

Recently purchased a 1937 Cord Custom Beverly, and it is in need of a distributor cap and trunk lid latch (bustle style). Also, the transmission is not working correctly. Its been sitting for almost 40 years, the motor runs great, once in gear, it goes down the road beautifully, BUT it refuses to go in reverse at all. It will go into first occasionally, second, third and fourth seem to work okay if not a little sticky. Would appreciate some information on where to start tinkering. Is there any literature that is available that would help? Thank you.
