Before you decide which way to go, look at some of the incredible specimens of inside exhaust cars there are out there. Arguably, the pipes take away from the smooth lines of the coffin-nosed hood and pontoon fender configuration. I don't think you can a mistake in either direction.

I agree, having functional pipes, no matter the story behind them, which I may never know, does enhance the look of the old sedan.

With brakes, two cylinders are better than one.

Hmmm--I'd love to have a set of outside pipes for my "transition" 36-37. Authentic or not, functional or not, they are truly an asset to the Westchester's appearance.

I defer to the experts on this site but I would guess that it is because the car was sent back to Cord to add the all popular side pipes or they were added by someone later. As far as the cam goes, both cams have been scarce for years and again it was most likely substituted during a previous repair

My weird 36 Westchester with pipes has the early type. Now if we could just figure out why a 36 has pipes and a supercharge cam that never had a driver for the supercharger, the mystery would be solved.

The first 300 S/C cars were wire type. #32061, #32064, and all after #310018-#32068 were later flat wire type.

On a 1937 supercharged Phaeton, I have now seen both the stamped metal grilles where the outside exhaust penetrates the hood as well as polished stainless steel wirecloth. My car has what appears to be factory stamped pieces. Which is correct?
