Steering column bearing

I found The Timken LL52549 / LL52510 cone and cup should fit. Haven't had a chance to reassemble (working on shift switch) and will update with photos and confirmation once it goes together.

Measure the housing size and shaft size and you will probably find a bearing that will work. The shaft size is the important one. You can work around a smaller housing size. Measurements should be made with a caliper to thousands. CORDially MIke

Hi Adam, I jumped the gun thinking the upper bearing in the steering box had been replaced with a bush. You should be ok with making and fitting a bronze bush at the top end of the steering column.

Thanks for the picture. It shows the problem. When I get there if I have an issue like yours. I will just machine a brass bushing from 660 brass like I used in my transmission gears.

Adam Years ago I found a GM top column bearing assembly at a flea market with inner diameter close. To make it fit the jacket I had to make a bushing for the outside diameter.

Terry, I didn't even think about the steering box. Makes complete sense now where this bearing goes.

Tom, that is the strangest bearing I've ever seen, certainly not something I'm going to find off the shelf. Thank you for the photo.

I think I'm going to end up having to machine another bushing instead of the correct bearing.
 

Is this the bearing you are referring to?  My outer race is in the column and it looks like it could be destroyed in removing it.  It is in good condition so I am going to leave it.  There is no number on the inner race.  There are 5/32 loose balls that run in the races.  Here is a picture of what I have taken apart.  I am sure the complete bearing is no longer available.

If you have the steering box apart take it to a bearing supply store and get them to check the outer ring and bearing sizes.
There is no separate inner ring as that is part of the worm.

The bearing at the top of the steering column on my car has been replaced at some point with a nylon ring that has worn and created noticeable play in the column. I've been searching and can't find any information here on the forums, or in any of the manuals. Finally ran across this document below which lists a Timken 05079-05185 for the column.

$70 later, the race doesn't even come close, far too large of a diameter to fit the steering column housing. What have others done? Anyone with their column currently on the bench and can find a part number?
