As I understand it the '36 lighter does not pop out; only the '37 is pop out.
Correct me if I am wrong; it wont be the first time!

I would guess the driver could tell when it was heated when the cat eye glows. Thats what the cat eye was for?

Mike I believe you are correct. But is the lighter supposed to be pressed in and it stays in till the element is hot enough. Then it pops out all on its own.

Don't worry about it working ................ give up smoking!
Actually I was just wondering the same thing a few minutes ago while fixing a few things up in the dash board area.
Compare the lighter to a modern one. I would assume for 1936 the driver held the lighter in until it became heated.

Cigar Lighter was created by 1748 S
I have an original cigar lighter and the dash housing I purchased a few years ago from Felix at the ACD factory in Oklahoma. How does it work? When I push it in is the design so it stays in till the element heats up. Then pops out. I understand the glowing part of it. Just not sure if I have to hold it in till it glows. Thanks...
