My cord phaeton was purchased in 87 and had been convert to 12V before we bought it. It had the starttix on and in use till I torn the car apart in 97. it seemed to work fine and I don't think the starttix was ever changed to a 12v unit.

It would be much easier to find a 6V Startix 'A' coil . It is my opinion that the
'E F' coil is unnecessery , as it is used as the holdout coil to restart the car if the engine should die. There are wireing diagrams for this internal fix. I have six Auburns and all of them have the EF coil circumvented.

Without opening the 12v just a guess but it must be very similar in construction. I have seen the inside of mine and it was just switched electromagnets. The part, startex, has been very uncommon. If there was any difference in 6 or 12v. it would have to be the number of windings and gauge of wire. It might be more unpredictable using a 6v. on a 12v. application. This would need to be tested n a bench by measuring the resistance and capacitance of the windings. Bench testing it at voltage would be useful. Tuners have been rewinding magneto, generator coils, and guitar pickups and the lacquer-covered wire is still available. If curious there is quite a few videos on the interweb,

and many others.

Thanks for the info Pete: I wasn’t looking for a startix and when this one pop up on my search engine on line, I didn’t pay much attention to the particulars. It would be interesting from the electronic gurus out there if it’s possible to convert a 12 volt startix to 6 volts. It would have to be a perfect conversion because you wouldn’t want the starter to kick in when the motor is running. ouch!!!

Hi Cliff
I never look for Startix units but I found the 1 you are talking about. It has extra terminals etc and would do who knows what. The 1 I have is the same as a std 6v Startix except it is 12 volt. I figure it would be perfect for someone who has changed their car over to 12 volt but still wants the advantage of the Startix.

There is a NOS 12 volt startix for sale now on EBay. It’s been on EBay for a few weeks now. A few months ago someone in South America had 3 of them for sale on eBay.

I have a 1941 Ford tractor that has a 12v battery and an alternator, it seems to run fine. I was worried it was going to burn up the 6v starter but it did not. the wiring on 6v needs to be the heavier gauge. I would be curious to compare the coils and contacts to see if there were any internal changes. possibly to make 12v users more comfortable than having a 6v apparatus on their new machine. You need to open, test, and examine before giving up.

Those were used on military stationary equipment up into the 60's.
