Plenty to digest here thanks guys, will order the downpipes from Don and have a look at the gaskets when the downpipes are off, matching up sounds like a good idea to me. My bodge is holding well and quieter than ever, just looks really bad ! At least it is still on the road.

The gaskets I used were from Olsen. The exhaust manifold seals were copper tube rings with a packing material inside.
The head gaskets were steel on both sides. I queried Olsens and they replied they supply Cord head gaskets in two styles copper/steel and steel/steel
I guess they have variations in the exhaust manifold gasket too.

I agree with Cliff. One other option is VW bug gasket is the same as Cord (if memory serves be right).

One of the advantages of using the gaskets that Olsen sells is that they are not copper rings but layered gasket material with the correct outside and inside diameters. If your threads in the manifold are damaged or partly stripped, the Olsen gasket is in layers and you can remove one of the layers so that when you screw in the brass nut, it goes in deeper and you can catch “good threads “ to tighten and seal the exhaust.

I have filters in the lines to stop any debree reaching the radiator core. They have screw tops to access the filters for cleaning.
You can also get suitable copper sealing rings from motorbike shops as well. The tubular rings have a heat resistant material inside. Just check the ID and OD.

You can get the gland packing gasket for manifold to down pipe from Olsen gaskets. He advertises in the club newsletter.

Ah, thanks, I guess the tubular copper washers are going to be long gone , where would I find those ? My brass nuts seem to move I did have a test of that so hopefully that will be alright .

The only person I know that repairs the threads in the end of the exhaust manifolds is Bill Bicknell in Missouri. He had special taps and dies to cut new threads in the manifolds and to fabricate new brass nuts to fit the larger thread.

I recommend Don Simmons for exhaust systems. The parts FIT.
Nice Cord.

Trevor there is usualy a brass gland nut that screws into the end of the exhaust manifold to hold the pipe . The threads have to be in good condition in order to get a sealed joint. A tubular copper washerfits between the manifold and flared end of the exhaust pipe. The first picture shows a Don Simmons exhaust system.

Had a nagging blow at the downpipe since start of ownership that yesterday got much worse, has rubbish flexi pipes and had fallen apart under a stainless repair band (not my doing) . So using a pipe section and clamps and support bracket managed to fashion a decent temporary repair that does not leak. Has anyone got a picture of the pipe where it fits into the manifold so I can decide whether to get new ones made locally or order from the guy in Canada if plausible. On a lighter note, did make it to a local event and back, pictured here with my Cord and wife's 47 Chevy that I built for her.
