You are correct. The left side does point down and the right side points up. So that means both sides do point to the left side of the engine. The small ends of the rods are offset from the big ends so that when properly installed the small ends are centered in the bores. Also the beveled side of the big ends ends up against the crankshaft and the flat side goes against the other rod on that journal.

Gary the big ends were converted to shell bearings in the mid 1950s .
The original bearings had a flat side as well as a curved side.
The problem is still what is the proper orientation of the spit holes?

Terry Best I can tell you is the rods have a flat side and a radius side. The radius MUST face the edge of the crank. So this causes the flat sides to the rod on the same journal. The spit hole design is to splash oil up towards the wrist pin and cylinders. Hope this helps.

All the rod numbers and spit holes point to the left side of the engine.

I am a bit confused as to correct way the connecting rod spit holes should face.
Looking at the engine with the flywheel at the front.
The LHS cylinders have connecting rods R1 to R4, with R1 closest to the flywheel.
Similary the RHS cylinders have connecting rods L1 to L4, with L1 closest to the flywheel.
I think the spit holes for R1 to R4 should face upwards ................ and .................... for L1 to L4 they should face down.
Am I correct?
