It is just a standard trans nothing special, what you will probably find is that your shift lever is worn and you are not taking it completely out of first before you are trying to put it in second, so your alignment balls and spring are the problem along with the pivot pin on the shift lever.
My 2 cents

Thanks a lot for all the replies

I will investigate further by removing the floors boards and see what is happening.

Haven't tried to shift without using the clutch "like a trucker".., but I did try various engine speeds with the clutch depressed to see if this makes a difference and it didn't.

I haven't been able to find much in terms of shop manuals/literature on transmissions for 1932. I picked up all the manual copies I could find at the ACD Museum last time I went there..there is a hand drawn exploded view of the transmission but not much is written about it.

Your help is really appreciated.

Rob

If you can shift all gears with running engine but stopped car, clutch seems to be fine. There must be a problem inside the transmission case...

Have you tried to shift as if you were a trucker who shifts all day with out the clutch, just using the RPM's of the motor with your ear.

I think I would take the floor boards up and actually look to see
the bearing moving[back and forth +free rotation} and check clearance

could be an issue in the tower ie. rails and forks
hen maybe something internal, possible worn or broken
thrust washer
go slow and dont over look the dumb stuff

Hi Greg
I bought the car recently - it was sitting for a few months while I fixed other things and yesterday was the first time I really test drove it.

No particular sounds besides loud gear clash and strong resistance to the stick when trying to fully force it into second.

I was thinking about the clutch no releasing well, but again, both 1rst and 3rd are switching fine though - and clutch end play seems normal.

any other moans and groans going at the same time
that are new

I cannot seem to be able to shift to second when the car is moving - either downshifting or upshifting.
I tried double clutching, triple clutching, teasing it in different ways with no success - all I get is gear clash and no way to get the gear in.

I also did try different oil weigths to see if this makes a difference - from SAE 140 to 200 to SAE 250 which is the thickest oil I could find - this usually helps some with gear clash on my 1932 Cadillac - but on the Auburn this did not make any difference at all.

When the car is stopped I can switch to second and the stick stays in second just fine.

Are there any adjustements possible ?

The first and second work just fine with no gear clash...its only the second gear.

Thanks
Rob
