the numbers stamped should include a date code. The A usual signifies January. Following the A should be a year, i.e 31, 32 etc.
We document these axel stampings during Certification.

I too was puzzled with the number stamped under the axle. I believe the number stamped is the Columbia part number. On our 8-77 the axle is lightly stamped 13061 in large 5/8 high numbers on the lower face. I also have a spare axle and it is stamped the same location, size and same number to the one on the car. I checked the Auburn parts book and it is not the same as the Auburn part number so I assume it is the Columbia part number.

Today while working on my car I discovered numbers stamped on my front axle. The numbers are "A 19495". This axle is from an original car, and the numbers from the axle and its' original frame have no ( logical) correlation.
Am I correct to assume that the number on the axle is for it alone, only for tracking and potential service issues?
Curious...
