I can do that, but as its pretty cold here now, and my garage isn't heated, it will wait until spring I'm afraid.

The large vacuum can is at the axle, but nothing else. The axle came in the 70ies into the car and was probably never connected to a shifting mechanism.
Regardless how I will use it - I would like to have a complete original shifting mechanism in the car, in working order, of course.

Perhaps you could shoot some pictures from that stuff and send it by email to me?

Thanks again

Andreas

I guess I deserved that....Obviously, its not done while moving, or even while its running for that matter. Actually, my 2 speed works fine as intended, and I use it regularly. Others reccommend leaving it in high and not touching it.

First time I even became aware of someone shifting it manually (at rest) from under the car, was when Mason Maynard did it to his former black 1932 cabriolet after the Newport Hillclimb a few years ago. It allowed a much faster cruise back to the hotel than low range would have allowed.

Hey 61xlch: does your car still have the two vacuum valves? A small one adjacent to the freewheeling shift lever, and the large one at the axle. If all else is there and free moving, I'd start with those.

...sounds like a tough job, especially while driving 50 mph plus.
I would like more shifting from inside the car...

So you had the mental image of Mike hanging onto the underside of an 8-98 at speed, too. :D

No problems using freewheeling and a 2 speed together on the 31-33 cars, as all had freewheeling and the 32 & later "deluxe" cars had both. On these cars, the freewheeling had to be engaged to be able to vacuum shift the 2 speed rear axle.

You should be able to crawl under the car and shift the rear axle manually if the internals are intact.

Starting with my 8-98 was created by 61xlch
Dear Auburn folks,

it took awhile, but now it starts. After my 51 Buick is sold, my 8-98 Phaeton Sedan is in my garage. Its basically unrestored, but with (poor) new paint, new top and new seat covers. My plans are doing only minor work this winter, driving it next year as it is and starting a gently restauration next winter.

But some questions already are coming up:

This car seems to have fortunatly a 2-speed-rear axle (thanks Randy , but its not in working order. Everything I need for shifting the rear end is missing (vacuum hoses, shifter lever or knob?, and so on...)
In my service bulletins I did not find too much infos about that.

1.Who can tell me what I need therefore, and send me some pics?
Somebody would sell some of these missing parts?

2. This car is missing all door-window seals. I would like to see some detailed pics of these seals and how its attached to the posts.

3. The inner door panels are not fitting well. The lower end of the vinyl is glued on the bottom of the door frames. How is it originally mounted to the door frame?

4. As far as I know the 8-98 up to 1931 comes with the free wheeling tranny (as mine) and the 8-105 from 1932 up came with the 2-speed axle.
Is there any problem known with using both features in the same car?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my rubbish english. (feel free to correct me)

Best regards,
