Check with Stan Gilliland on that gas cap, I got one from him years ago, and it had a vent hole already in it

I got some of the fluid by King-Seely from Classic and Exotic as recommended by Bruce. The packaging says to keep in the dark until installed. You said that the gas caps are available for 34-36, but I have a 30? Any suggestions? I haven't yet tried to see if I can just pick one up from the local auto parts store - not original, but would suffice until I find one.

The vent on top of the tank that is incorporated into the tele-gage is not an atmospheric equalizer. The end of the tube is below the level of the gasoline. Yes, gas will come out the top of the tank if it is filled up the neck of the tank as we do on modern cars.
The original Auburn gas caps were vented.
I have red gage fluid of the correct specific gravity that does not turn clear in six months.
Gas caps are available for 34-36 cars.
I would post pictures of the tele-gage and correct gas cap, but it is too much of a hassle on this site.

Mike - you bring up another good issue - I don't have a gas cap yet. Do you know of anyone who has these for sale? In the meantime I was going to see if I could find a cheap replacement at the auto parts store.

I'm trying to clean up the wiring and cables at the instrument panel, so it seemed like a good time to attack the gauge fluid issue.

Neal: Well, at least you have an idea why your Telegauge fluid is disappearing. I know what a pain it is to crawl under the dash to get at that gauge. Hope it works out for you.

The gas caps are vented. If it doesn't vent get another cap. I would not drill a hole in the neck. Don't make another problem to solve a problem.
CORDially Mike

not sure on the '30, but for 34-36, there is a vent tube in the top of the tank that allows for vacuum/pressure to be relieved. If you put too much gas in the tank, it acts as an overflow as well (not recommended, but confirmed by accident)

Hi.

I vote for the cap. A hole in the tube is hard to restore to perfection in the future. And you can put a loose-fit piece of gasket or cork in the cap and it will still breathe without sloshing fuel out.

My 3 cents... (inflation, you know...)

right now the gas tank is bone dry empty. I had it cleaned out and lined and I just reinstalled it. I haven't yet put any fuel into it yet, so if I were to drill the neck, now is the time. What do we all think - neck or cap?

I would be worried that drilling a hole on the gas tank neck might make a spark and boom! I wouldn't do it, I'd drlill a hole in the cap.

Neal: I talked to another club member that had the same problem of disappearing fluid. He discovered that if the gas cap seals too well, a vacuum is created in the tank and it sucks the fluid out of the sight gauge.
The solution: Drill a 1/8" hole in the filler tube, just under the gas cap. This will allow the tank to relieve it's vacuum and thus prevent fluid draw-down.

Fuel gauge liquid was created by Neal Ziff
The manual for my '30 8-95 says that the "red liquid in the gauge head is spcially selected because of its specific gravity and other characteristics. Positively no other will do. It can be supplied by your dealer......" Can anyone tell me what this "magic" liquid is and how I can get some? In the 60 odd years my car has been sitting around it seems that whatever was in there has vanished.
