I know of the controversy and made my decision. The decision was based on how I drive my car. I also have radials on two 67 corvettes and a 64 Corvair with wire wheels that were not designed for radials either. They all see much more agresive driving than the Auburn. I will let everyone know if I have any trouble.

Hi Mike, there has been a lot of discussion on other forums and articles in Old Car Weekly about the safety of putting radial tires on rims that were not designed for them. There are engineers that steadfastly disagree with using radial tires on old rims and there are restorers that have used them successfully for tens of thousands of miles.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Hi Curt, I should have said Diamond Back Radials. They are tubless tires. It is recommonded to not use tubes in radials if possible because of the side walls on radials flex making friction against the tubes. There are radial tubes that are thicker than standard tubes if you must use tubes with radials. I chose not to use tubes and have had no problems to this point.

I didn't know you could do that.

I used Diamond Back blackwalls with one side shaved of lettering and mounted them tubless. Have driven 3000 miles with no problems and a very smooth ride. I sealed each spoke end with silicone sealer.
