More information I found out about the Cut-out: Another name for this device is "Reverse Current Relay". It's job is to prevent the battery from "motoring" the generator after the car is shut off. It is NOT a voltage regulator. You can regulate your voltage by manipulating the third brush on the generator.

Terry, Murray & Pete: Thanks for the input! I cleaned up my contacts under the dash at the ammeter and tightened them real good, but no dice. I finally installed a different cut-out that I had bought thru Ebay and that did the trick (so far). That's my third cut-out, so I hope she holds up.
By the way, I was told by a "grizzled old Auburn Expert" that polarizing is never needed with a cut-out system. Only with more modern voltage regulators.

I talked to a friend of mine who is an expert at solving electrical problems.
He, too, said to make sure that the connections on the amp meter are tight. Also, check for any warm connections with it charging. Is the fan belt tight? With the car running, at a medium engine speed, check the DC voltage at the generator side of the cut-out. If it is 7 volts or more, check the output voltage on the battery side of the cutout. The DC voltage should be the same on both sides. If not, the problem is in the generator. Hope that this helps you.

Thanks. I did try to polarize the generator by touching a wire to the "Field" and then to the "Batt". I got a good spark, but when I started the car and revved it up, still no charge. Maybe I'll try a different cutout...

You must polarize the generator every time it is disconnected or serviced.
To polarize the generator, simply make a short jumper wire to short between the battery (b or bat) and generator (g or gen) lugs on the cutout relay or voltage regulator. Only a split-second or a spark is required, so simply tap your jumper wire onto the lugs and pull them right back off. This should cure the problem

Problem with charging system was created by ilikescars
Hi: I'm wondering if anybody can help me with my charging system.
I have a 36 s/c Auburn with a six volt generator. When I first installed it on the car, the ammeter indicated no charge. An hour later I ran the car and it was charging perfectly. The next time I ran it, no charge. I changed the cut-out regulator with a new one, but still no charge. I took the generator off and had it tested at a automotive shop, and it indicated that it was working fine. When I reinstalled the generator and started the engine, it showed a charge again. Then the next day, no charge. I cleaned the points on the cut-out. Same results. It's driving me nuts.
BTW, I made sure the generator was properly grounded to the engine.
Any help would be appreciated.
