Hey everyone again
I didn't know people were still looking at this post, but that's cool.
It turns out that this is a 1927 8-88 Tourer in the 147inch long wheelbase. I may have actually posted this in a later post. I have put the Car (or whats left of it) in a shed on our farm until I decide to restore it, which of course will be no simple task, but since it is pretty rare I reckon it would be worth it; Auburns of any kind are not common in Australia.

Just an FYI,
Ray Parker please verify:

In 1926, Auburn had a 8-88 with the Big 8 motor. Designation 4HM.
In 1925, the big 8 motor designation was 2HM.

Ray Parker owns one of each. He would be the one to verify the motor designation.

Hi Lance,

for me, looking at the wooden spoke wheels, the fire wall, the window frame and the radiator hood it is a 8-88 1927.
The ACD-Museum has one and I have a lot of pictures they made for me.
If you send me your e-mail I will send you pictures.

Hi there Lance,
I have several Auburns in what several people would term various rates of decay - I have started on my 4-44..but to the 8-88. I have 2 chassis, a heap of spares and a few "straight 8's" to go with them. I live in Brisbane and my no. is 07 3289 4649 if you need help with anything - limited though it would be. If you need some excellent technical knowledge I would suggest you ring Max Harris on 08 8254 9648 or Ross McRae on 02 4782 1846. By the way, my 4-44 was originally bought from up your way. Regards
Bruce Beattie.

You should join The Club. There are around 25 members of the ACD Club in Australia. They have a large get together every two years.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I have been considering trying to restore it, I'm still not sure, I haven't yet been able to get in touch with anyone in Australia who has an Auburn or several. Basically the running gear is all there (except the Carby and Genny and Starter have been removed) and the steel parts for all the wheels are all there. The Farmer that I know who owns it was going to turn in into a trailer back in the 50s. How easy is it to find panelwork for one of these?

To view some more old cars see this boneyard that has been closed since the fifties, I can remember when the yards had acres of stuff like this and in much better condition. Great flathead motors of every make, crushed to make 70's imports. I went back a few months later to the yard and asked, what had happened to all the acres of vintage cars that had been there and the owner said they were sold to the scrap for 15$ each, would you have paid that? I had no land to put them anyway. It was neet seeing columns of visors and frnderskirts on cars stored in the desert with the windows rolled up. If one looked in the local paper there were lots of very clean cars for real cheap, they were not liked when a new car was so inexpensive and that was not that long ago, 35-40 years. There may be a few cords in the warehouse at Olivers. The Cord is next to the last slide in the show.

My listing of Lycoming Engines shows that the 4HM Engine was used in the 1927 Auburn 8-88, I believe this engine model was also used by Elcar, Gardner, McFarlan, and Roamer. Engine is listed as 3.25 bore, 4.50 stroke and rated at 84 bhp , 2900 rpm with compression ratiof 4.5

Ray, that could be the start of your Florida collection. If so, it would be the Jewel of your Florida collection.

Hey Ray,

Was there a 4HM motor designation in 1925? I believe the 4HM designates the Big 8 Lycoming with the 1 1/4 Schebler carburetor.

Too bad it doesn't have artillery wheels..lol

The running gear is from a 1925-27 Auburn Touring Car. It doesn't look like there is a lot salvageable, but there are members in Australia that might be interested.

I wish it was closer to Indiana, I would like to add a third 8-88 Auburn to my collection.

Greetings. The remains of this Auburn sit on a farm at Friends of our family and I would like to know if anyone can identify it for me. (photo supplied hopefully) It has engine number 4HM18138 and is a straight 8. The wheels are Wooden (although eaten by White ants) as is the Firewall. The chassis measures approx 16 feet. From my limited success in research I think it might be a mid 20s 8-88, but obviously there are people around who know more than me.
Also what Carburettor would it have been fitted with, I may be able to get one from another fellow, but neither of us is 100% sure that it is what it needs.

Thank you all and Happy Christmas
Lance
