It seems that my door handle has been modified and I am in the process of disassembling it to see exactly what has been done. Thank you for all the pictures. Stay tuned.

I do not know if Yale and Basco both made handles for Auburn in 31-3(Randy would know this)
3 locking handles; pics in order
Handle #1- bottom right-1 key; pics 2-4, could be Auburn
-handle chromed with lock cylinder in place-bad idea
-lock cylinder stuck, Faith Chicago key, handle junk
Handle #2-center handle-1 key with ring, pics 5-7
-after market, bezel in bad pot metal
-lock cyl stuck, locked position alows handle to spin freely
Handle #3-LH handle in first pic,-2 keys Basco;pics 8-12, could be Auburn
-shows bezel with insert which locks the handle
-pics show tongue in the locked and unlocked positions
-pin hole near the tongue may be used to remove the lock cyl(don't know)
-operates properly
-hole in the usual place to remove lock cyl is just a depression

I think you might be right... I've put lock fluid on and there is no movement beyond the what I can feel by inserting the key.

The door handle operates by locking the handle in the escutcheon in the door so the whole handle will not turn.
Someone seems to have modified your handle.
1-the handle should be 1 piece
2-trying to remove the cylinder should require inserting the paper clip not much more than 1/8". I suspect your handle is just a dummy
I will look tomorrow and see if I have a repairable handle or a junk 1 so you can see how it works.
Time to ask if anyone has a good handle for sale.
Pete

The lock cylinder must be turned so the paper clip pushes on the center of the tongue; you can feel the spring tension as you depress the tongue. Once depressed and held in(down) rotate the cylinder back and forth slightly with a key while pulling and it should come out.

Question: are there two parts to this handle; first is copper colored handle and second is the silver colored end that fits into the door lock mechanism. Is the silver end suppose to turn inside the door handle?

First of all, thank you for your effort to help me out! My door handle does have the small hole exactly where you suggested that it would be... a local locksmith said the hole was simply for drainage. I will fiddle with this tomorrow as you suggested and let you know what the outcome is.
Again, thanks!

Here are pics of an Auburn handle showing the small hole thru which you must depress a retaining ring which holds the lock cylinder in place; a paper clip works well.
The other pics show several lock cylinders with and without script keys, all yale except the very right key(Chicago).
The LH cylinder and non-script key would work for you;UNLESS you have an after market door handle. As a general rule aftermarket handles do not have the small peak above the cylinder hole. If you want a pic I can get 1.
My 2 cents

My problem is a lack of understanding for the original design (plus a general lack of knowledge about door handle locks in particular). As you can tell, I need help on an elementary level.
