I took a pic of the Meteor in Auburn this year, entered it in a grouping of 3 pictures at the DeKalb County Free Fall Fair (Auburn Fairgrounds) - won 1st place in related pictures. :D The other 2 pictures consisted of an Auburn parked outside the museum by the Seward Statue that was there, and Ken Clark's L-29 that I took a few years back.

Pebble Beach is an exercise in who can spend the most money. Even Jay Leno doesn't try to compete on a regular basis. It really is a Billionaire's car show.

I got this in my email box late last week. Not to put a damper on the great pics & conversation, but I thought some would like to know about this.......

Titusville, FL; Car Collector Magazine

It is with great sadness that we must inform the collector car community of the loss of David Baldwin who was the Director of Marketing for Car Collector Magazine. While he was attending the Pebble Beach activities, a tragic accident occurred. David fell early Thursday morning August 16th, hit his head and unfortunately never recovered from the injuries he sustained. He was the Marketing Director for Car Collector magazine and part of our publishing family for almost five years. He will be missed by all who have come to know and meet him over the years. Below are the funeral arrangements if you would like to attend or send flowers.

Visitation for David Baldwin will be Saturday, August 25th from 11:00 am ? 12:00 noon, with a service immediately following at the First Baptists Church of Port St. John, 3900 Fay Blvd, Cocoa, FL 32927. Friends and family will celebrate our beloved Davi d?s life at the home of his brother, Brian Baldwin in Rockledge FL, following services.

An educational trust fund for David?s daughter, Hannah, will be established.

Our thought and prayers are with his wife Dena, daughter Hannah, and family.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Broadus and the Car Collector magazine team

The Meteor exudes speed and freedom in powerful style. It is a fine representative of the model line as has the Mormon Meteor always been.
This is the Hollywood of car shows baby; this is the Academy Awards. George C. Scott would say, ?Why are we competing? All the films this year are good, they?re all winners.?
Everyone is dressed to the 10?s and an un-restored car would not have the ?bling? to win original. I would love to see a car such as Lenos barn X win Pebble Beach with a sympathetic restoration, but what are the odds?
Anyone who sees the Meteor can imagine driving unrestrained at top speed, what a thrill.
To see that it still exists in 2007 is an accomplishment, and to draw crowds wherever it goes 70+ years later and stun the crowd as if it some kind of futuristic spaceship.
The Mars or Father divine car may exude wealth and comfort; in the same chassis in this narrow, low configuration can only mesmerize an onlooker into thinking Ab is at the snack stand and he will be right back to tell of his latest record.

I liked the Mormon Meteor better when it was a patinaed driver. Restored it has much less character--and, frankly, I thought it looked better with wire wheels and real headlights. Oh well, to each (owner) his own...

The Mormon Meteor wins Pebble Beach "Best of Show".

Not what I would have picked considering the stunning array of gleaming Duesenbergs on display, but I am glad it was a Duesenberg up there on the Winner's Ramp!

I wish I had known you were there. I took most of the same pictures you did. When we used to show Duesenbergs about ten would show up. I did visit with Randy Ema for a bit. It was nice seeing him. We had the basic black Rolls Silver ghost in class H, and a blue Talbot Lago, a 1938, model.

ROFL.... even the classic ACD's have blunders. I'll watch the video later tonight. That 28meg will eat my computer at work.

I'm surprised no pic of a display from ACD Museum? I know Matt was there.

Wow! What drama at Pebble Beach today!

Contending for 1st place in the Duesenberg Class are:

Class G (Duesenberg J & SJ)

1st 1930 Duesenberg J Murphy Disappearing Top Torpedo Convertible Coupe owned by the The William Lyon Family located in Newport Beach

2nd 1931 Duesenberg J Murphy Coupe owned by Lee and Joan Herrington from Bow, New Hampshire

3rd 1935 Duesenberg J Bohman & Schwartz Convertible Coupe owned by Sam and Emily Mann from Englewood, New Jersey

All were magnificent, the cars are lined up three abreast waiting for the results ... and waiting ... Then Sam Mann's comes in third, then Lee Herrington's comes in second, Bill Lyon wins!

OR DOES HE??

His Duesenberg won't start! The announcer solemnly announces that Pebble Beach rules require the winner to drive over the ramp. Minutes tick by, the crowd senses a catastrophe for General Lyon. So much time goes by that cars from the next class start lining up in front of the General's J. Any second the announcer is going to declare Bill Lyon disqualified. Everyone holds their breath!

Out of nowhere, Jay Leno streaks toward the stricken Model J. He sticks his head in the window, and probably asks the General and his son if they had forgotten to fill up!

Randy Ema is then seen pouring gas into the tank with a small 2-gallon red jug.

The J starts! The crowd goes crazy! I was relieved that when the going gets rough, the J's get going!

The General drives over the ramp to collect his trophy.

Watch the action here: Warning this is a 28-meg video file.

I'm really hoping that Pebble will bring some long-stored Js out of the woodwork.

The replica of J-585 was done by IDA Automotive, the same people who do the fiberglass Tucker replicas. Wonder what General Lyons thinks of it...

(P.S. What happened to J-256? <!-- s:cry: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt="" title="Crying or Very sad" /><!-- s:cry: --> Last time I saw it it had the original body and had been restored to the nines...)

Our ACD cars are featured this year at Pebble Beach. Haven't seen any yet though and I have been here 3 days. Maybe I'll see some on Sunday.

Well, we did see Ritchie Kline's J256 Duesenberg Chassis on display at the Blackhawk Museum display

And we saw this. Not sure exactly what it was, but the owner says it is a recreation of the Maharajah Dusenberg. This was on display on Ocean Blvd in Carmel.

Here is a Bugatti Veyron. 1.1 million Euros. Quck, how much is that in US? I think about 1.6 million?

Big day is tomorrow. Lots of pics to follow.
