He was - In the video he's the one in the wheelchair. His reaction seemed a bit muted, but he was quite astounded to see it running and driving after all these years. Thanks for all the great responses to the post.

Get it mechanically sound, maybe make the top so it doesn't leak (in case you get caught in weather), then drive and enjoy it. You will get more looks, comments, and enjoyment out of it that way. Eventually, you may want to start restoring, but running/driving are the priorities!

Nice job, great looking car!

I love it !!!

For those who are too young to know, what you see here is EXACTLY what this hobby looked like back in the 1950's. I know because my dad was like yours, collecting but not restoring cars.

That photo of the '52 chevy towing your Auburn in particular captures the essence of what it was about. No fancy enclosed car haulers back then. If you found a car in a barn, you aired up the tires and towed it home on a chain.
If you got it running, you drove it as is. No concours restorations, just fix it up as you can afford it....or not.

My dad drove his Model J around without a hood for years. His daily driver was a '28 Rolls PI Springfield Brewster convertible sedan. We towed a Model J on a chain that had no engine.
I kind of wish it was more like that now, but nothing lasts forever.

This photo is from 1962, that is me age 16 behind the wheel.

Hi Neal!

MANY congratulations on getting your half-century-plus year project self-mobile! From pulling a stubborn rear wheel to questions and comments about all the car systems, I have followed your steady progress.

"Ohhhhhhhhhh--what a feeling"!!!!!, eh?

Congrats Neal, Looks to me as if you'd spend a little more time it will be ready for the parade. Heck, that old girl looks like it would even make the Hoosier Tour!

This is what this club is all about! I think you need to bring it to the Auburn reunion as is and relish in the moment. It will only be original once. Congratulations and enjoy!

Wow that car sounds awesome!

But why rush into things and drive it before it's done?

I want to thank the ACD Club and members for all the help they have given me over the last couple of years which resulted in this last weekend's milestone. For the first time since it has been in our family - 54 years - we drove our 1930 8-95. I've included a couple of photos here - one shows my father when he towed the car home in 1956 - and the other shows me driving the car. Also, here is a link to a video of the big event:

Thanks again for all the help - I'm sure I'll need plenty more as this wonderful project continues.
Neal
