Sliding Gear Transmission History was created by sunroofcord
Yesterday, I came across an old "Cars And Parts" magazine article among my late fathers literature collection titled Healey and Co. From Carriage to Car. Some one had written Cord on the article (wasn't Dads handwriting). I couldn't figure out what this article had to do with Cords until I read the following paragraph;

Another of the first Healy cars to divorce itself from it's horse and carriage ancestry was a 1903 touring model with a French four cylinder Panhard motor. Panhard developed the sliding gear transmission. Thus a gear shift lever to the right of the driver could be adjusted for two, three, or four speeds ahead, according to the design. The second lever was an emergency brake. The pedals on the floor were the clutch, which was depressed when shifting speeds, and the foot brake.
