This is Clark Gable's JN as it appears today after a restoration. The photo was taken at Pebble Beach by Robert Armstrong.

Also notice that in the black-and-white photo, the door sill line curves up towards the rear fender. Not so in the Lucas car. Not so sure about the two-tone paint.

It could be the body from J-153 / 2178, with the modifications Paul mentioned, but I'm not sure. Does Lucas still own J-364? It was offered at Kruse Fall Auburn a few years ago but I don't think it sold.

I would bet that the body once had similar two tone paint like the J-364 has now - follow the line

While they look similar they are not the same. The windscreen on J364 has a curve on the upper edge and the top curve on the door is much steeper where it meets the cowl. The door also looks bigger to me although it's hard to tell esp. with the two tone paint.

Good point, Jan, I had never noticed that before...

Ed Lucas owns/owned J-364/2369 for a long time and had it restored with that body (which probably never saw the inside of Murphy's shop...ever). He also owned J-153/2178 at one point, right before the CHASSIS was sold to Carroll. The plot thickens...

this body was formerly presumably on J-153 / 2178

why does it seem to me to be in some details very similar to the "Murphy" body that is with J-364? especially the windscreen and the shape of the doors looks to be the same

The original figoni body is now blue and black and has curved louvres and much wider fenders with no supercharger. It was mated with another duesenberg chassis when the body was rediscovered after the replica was built. The old photos that I have seen of this car show it being white (or some light color) and one dark colour as well as two tone.

If anyone has different info please let me know.

You're right. Rick Carroll put the steel original body on J-153 / 2178 and an aluminum replica on the French Speedster's original chassis, J-465 / 2509. Both were restored. J-465 / 2509 is the supercharged car in the picture and is owned by the Manns in NJ. Last I heard J-153 / 2178, the blue and black car, was in a collection in Nevada.

The Clark Gable car that he sold after Carole Lombards death is my favorite. Maybe Chris has a picture he can post of that particular car.

The French Speedster has been modified significantly since it was built. It was not supercharged and did not have side exhaust originally. It was a much more attractive car, IMHO, as originally built.

I?m not sure about the Schwartz Speedster with the fenders expecting high water

Of the speedsters I prefer the Figoni, especially the tail and the fenders, what I don?t understand on this body are the chrome screens with the external exhaust - it doesn?t go together with the european body

I can't say I love them all (the throne car comes to mind), but certainly most of them.

Chris lists two of my favorites:

Murphy Convertible Coupe #J-357 / 2388. The longest term owner of record was someone I was fortunate to spend a fair amount of time talking with at Auburn over the years. I love the Murphy convertible coupes, this one in particular.

Brunn Riviera Phaeton #J-528 / 2551. The last (and very long term) owner of this car prior to the current one was from my area. I have ridden in it a couple of times, and she runs very nicely!

here's my third:

LeBaron Barrelside Phaeton # J-299 / 2318. A short wheelbase barrelside with an interesting history.

I love them all, but three in particular:

Brunn Riviera Phaeton #J-528 / 2551. I know the fellow who did its first mechanical rebuild in the early 1950s when he was my age and hear stories about driving it hard and fast regularly.

Murphy Dual Cowl Phaeton #J-264 / 2285. Looks like it just left Jay Gatsby's carriage house.

Murphy Convertible Coupe #J-357 / 2388. The only J to anyone's knowledge sold new in my home state and owned by natives ever since. Also, a great largely original car that still gets driven.

It could be a blending of memories, but I'd swear that car did not have side pipes before. The OQuinn collection has a supercharged Auburn with no side pipes.

The car sure looks better with the top down. It has a trunk lid way out on the end of that boat tail with a smallish functional truck.

Bill,
This is the black speedster you referenced. Chassis #2536
Last I knew it was owned by the Family Classic Cars dealer in south Orange County, and I've seen it in their showroom. Now their website says it has been sold. BTW it has side pipes but the hood sides do not have the screens.

Sitting beside me at Amelia Island was that Bill Harrah, Schwartz, Clyde Wade, and whoever else Duesenberg speedster with pontoon fenders and no side pipes. Jerry Moore had that car for awhile. It was red, then black, then I think red again. Last time I saw it it was black.

I like the looks of that car.

Well now we know of some of the not so pretty Dusenbergs ,see last
post. Lets hear some of your opinions of the best looking Duesenbergs.
Since I thought of it, I'll vote for the taper tail speedster in a California collection. My filing system does not allow me to give you the numbers of the car at this time, I can only look up car unless I have a J number.
