My own view of authenticity depends upon what the car will be used for. Something that is mostly for show, with occasional driving, I would want as authentic as humanly possible--with only the colors, materials, and options used on that particular car when it was sold off the showroom floor.
A "tour car" that is usually JUST driven, rather than being shown, would be whatever I want it to be--colors, options, etc.
All just a matter of opinion and choice. If you shell out the money for a car, you make it as you want it--it's yours.
This Duesenberg has already won Pebble Beach. In my mind showing it after that is useless--kinda like entering the county fair after winning the Pillsbury Bake-Off. So I'd take off the trunk and sidemount covers, install black upholstery and blackwall tires, and start driving.

Yes, it's certainly a matter of individual taste. Some classics, I couldn't imagine without their trunks while others look entirely too "tacked-on". The Retromobile Model J falls into the latter category for me. As for sidemounts, in my own opinion a car needs the wheelbase to carry it off. Most L-29's and Model J's certainly can, and many Auburns. I tend to like sidemounts (preferably dual) as representative of the era, but on some smaller and/or less expensive makes they do look just a bit pretentious.
To each their own, and if it's your car and you like these things, that's really all that matters.

Isn't it exciting to know how everybody feels so different about the same things. To me the side mount help make the L-29 the most beautiful car there is. Side mounts are beautiful on all cars of the classic era.
The trunks are of the time so I like them. There are some cars that do look great and some only OK. I too, do think they look better on the Sedan and Convertible Sedans better than the Cabriolets, But I still like them. It took me 10 years to find an original one for my White L-29 Cabriolet.
My 2 Cents

The trunk looks like a add on. Destroys the lines. I feel the same with trunks on L-29 Cab. L-29 would also look better without side mounts.

Wasn't planning on it, although feel free to start something if you'd like.
I don't care for the color combination or the trunk, but I suppose each wouldn't be that hard to change. I agree that it has great history.

That car is amazing! Are you going to do a fantasy bidding thing on it?
