Thanks for the quick response to this. I probably will play with these connectors before I install wires. Maybe use some light oil to free any stuck springs. I did test a few and found some resistance to movement.

The terminals are spring-loaded. You might be able to insert the connectors by hand, but people sell tools or you can make your own to make it easier. It can be done with needle nose pliers, but they have a penchant for deforming the connector or slipping off and scratching the housing.

Just push on the tip with a short flathead screwdriver to take them out again.

On top of the vacuum solenoid block are the wire connectors. Are they spring loaded and the bullet ends of the shifting harness just press into them? Here's a pic of what I don't know how the wires connects to these.
