It is better to use right and left side. There are right hand drive cars and using driver and passenger can be very confusing.

Well that was wrong. My trans number is on the DRIVERS side and not the passenger side.. Kind of silly looking at the trans and not recognising whats the drivers or passenger side. Sorry for the misinformation given.

Well I finally found my trans numbers. They are stamped VERY lightly on the passenger side just down from the top machined surface like seen here in these great posts. Mine is T585... No gear ratio or any other numbers or letters. I will be tearing down the trans completely but at a later time. Just not enough shop space for that at this time. Will also be recording all this with pics. Been having CRS issues.....

Joel,

Almost all S/N's were stamped on the top as we are used to seeing. There are some that were stamped on the left side like T508 and T238 above. These are very few, I only remember one in Certification.

I have never seen the stamping on the right side as shown above. That is where I need to do some additional research and try to figure it out. The photos here are very helpful.

Jim,
I thought all S/N's were stamped on top like the first photo T1577.
I don't believe I ever recorded the number on the side

Well so far I have not found any numbers on the top or the drivers side of my trans. I will continue looking later. My trans does have the interlock lever in the drivers side of the trans.

That trans number T238 sure looks alot like a Z was forced over and 8 number. Kind of strange looking. Wonder if someone made a mistake and could not "find" the correct stamp so they "made" the 3 by overstamping part of an 8. No matter. Great pics of where I have to search now. I also like the trans mount for the engine stand.. Great idea to hold a difficult trans shape. I plan on making this when I take apart my trans. Thanks...

Hi Eric: I will forward your numbers info to Ron Irwin, the Cord historian. He does not use the Internet. Perhaps he can provide more info. As Jim O'Brien says, we are still learning.
CORDially, Tim.

Hi Eric.

Could you either post or send me some photos of the numbers on the cases you are talking about.

Most of the transmission cases were marked on the top as noted in the posts above. There were some early cases that were on the left side. I've never seen or heard of them being stamped on the right side, but then again we are still learning about these cars.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Tim, I have 3 cases marked on the side.T 238 and T508 marked on left (drivers) side. The 3rd case is odd, marked T 1577 on top where the S/N is located on the later cases. This is also a type 1 case with the external retaining bolt for the idler shaft. After cleaning the case I found another S/N marked on the right side, not the left, it is T150. Also, followed by a 2 inch space the numbers, 100- 09. These last numbers were stamped in using a smaller stamp. Maybe a factory rebuild and also renumbered? Any ideas?
Eric

Hi Gary: look under the trans cover if you haven't removed it. If nothing there, look on the driver's side of the case, at the very top. They will be lightly stamped there. And if you find them on the side, please send that info to me. Thank you.

Where will I find the trans numbers on my case? I was cleaning on the top area of the shift cylinder mount but did not find anything. My trans has the lock out lever so its not an early trans before the lock outs. I think its on the drivers side but can't recall where.
