I was reading my book about rebuilding the Cord trans and found the torque required on the nut for the front axles as they come thru the brake drums. It says its 300 lbs... <!-- s:o --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_surprised.gif" alt="" title="Surprised" /><!-- s:o --> Well my 1/2 inch drive torque wrench goes up to 150 lbs so I guess I will be looking into a torque multiplier when the time comes. Ot take a chance and go to 150 and then use my 36 inch breaker bar and a cheater to give it a little more. Way back when I was working on huge main steam valves in power plants we had a tool called a Hi Torq. We were able to make 10,000 lbs of torque on steam valves and such is found in nuclear or fossil fueled power plants. Sure beats hammering on them with 16 lbs sledges and slugging wrenches. We had all kinds of old torque wrenches too. Some of them were 6 ft long and 1 1/2 inch drive. Even had them that size with the spring bar. Back them we were men. Just a distant memory now but good memories all the same..

Gary, to be honest I don't remember where I got the torque figure from.
I don't think it matters if it's 120 or 170. The bearings need to be shimmed and the nut needs to be tight. When new
the collar should probably have been enough to shim out the bearings, but after all these years....

Gary, when I put up this question in 2010 I did not get much of a response.

In the end I drilled both the nut and shaft for lock wire.
Hope this helps
Frank

Still hoping someone has information on how the suspension outer bearing preload is made and what torque on the large nuts.

Does anyone have an assembly diagram of the suspension outer arm bearing retainer flet seals and the torque on the large nut. I have all these parts plated and ready to put back together. Sadly about 30 years ago we did not have the picture taking cameras in our phones. I was young and did not draw it out. Now I feel it best to ask before I make a mistake. Thanks all.
