Jim its the pins that holds the steel shell to the dog bone side of the universal joint. I got it figured out. I was using a sharpened flat blade screw driver but was getting lots of flex. Ended up using an endustrical scraper I made up probably 20 years ago. All the scraper is was a broken power hacksaw blade sharpened on one end. Surprisingly they have a hardened dege where the teeth are but the rest of the blade is softer material. This blade was about 24 inches x 2 inches x 1/8 inch. A couple of 1/4 inch cork gasket material glued to the handle and some electrical tape makes for a nice handle. Leaving the end clear makes for a very positive hit directing thru to the work being done. Thanks for the tip on the roll pins. Thats a good idea. I'm sure these joints have never been apart since they were made some 75+ years back.

What pins are you talking about? The pins that hold the inner and outter CV joints together? If that's the case when you put it back together use a roll pin instead of the drive pins. It holds just fine and a lot easier to get out.

<!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> Wow is this a ruff job getting the 4 pins out of the covers so I can clean and inspect everything. Seems once I get the pin up about 1/32 I can then use a pair of 12 inch long end nippers to grab the head and rock it out using the leverage. But getting them up that high is no fun. I have one side completely apart and cleaned but I wonder how the grease stays in the joint? Is there a plug under the spring that holds the grease in the joint or what?
