Hi,

This sounds like a job for Egge-man!

Yes, it was part of the process of my rods being modified. It was done by Westside Engine, 12 W 3rd Street in Santa Rosa, CA 95401. Phone is 707-527-0794. This was done about 5 or 6 years ago. I think it cost $ 600+ then.

So Tom, do you have to machine the cap to accept the one lug?

In the original main bearing that has been bored out we used a woodruff/keyseat cutter 3/16 wide and milled in the locating lug cut you see in any modern main or rod. We left the original dowel in the cap to keep the bored out original bearing from spinning.

I converted my rods to inserts about six years ago. I got the inserts from Northwestern Auto Supply, 616-241-5611 or 800-704-1078. The part number was Fed Mogul 9570 SB. You have to drill for wrist pin oil and remove 1 lug from edge of the shell.

Have 3 blocks here that have been modified for inserts, this was done long before I jumped into these piles of parts that are Cords! Backtracking today this is what was done. Original babbitt bearings were line bored to insert housing bore, in this case 2.7000". Removed from block and locating lug milled in. Insert installed,so what I have here is an insert in insert. The bearings used are Clevite brand MB-1681p two times and MB-1671p (F) flanged. The flange has been turned off. These are listed for a Allis-Chalmers 153cid 4 cyl engine. Standard for 2.4970/2.4980 shaft,-010,020,and030 available. We did make new center bearing shells because of wear to thrust surfaces and crank regrind to clean up scored surfaces.
I must say that this has NOT been tested as these have been sitting partially assembled for 15 years and I have been in the puzzle less than a year. Eric

The inserts for the connecting rods are from a '57 Pontiac. I don't remember the number off hand but I can get them for you if you need them. The connecting rods do have to be machined out for the inserts to fit. This must be done carefully since there isn't a lot of room between the insert and the bolts.

For the mains a couple of people have put inserts in but no one knows what they have used or how they did it. I've never found bearings that would fit and several people that I know have tried and not been able to find bearings that will work. If anyone know please post so we can all share.

So these are the rods and mains on the crank?? If so you might contact Egge Machine Shop in Whittier Ca. I know they offer bearing rebabbiting. I will be contacting them in the future on my engine. There about 4 miles from my home... Lucky me I guess. I really have not heard nor seen on a bearing made that fits our cranks so I will be watching this post.

You might define "slipper bearing" for us U.S. folks.

Does anyone know what slipper bearings to use on a 810 motor for a conversion?
