Of course Cicero Illinois is a town, everyone around here knows big Al as the saint of Cicero. Big Al also had a place to hide in Glenwood Ill., been in that house--secret passage way between walls, Cicero ave. is route 50 in Illinois.

Could be. Al Capone hung out there, if I remember correctly. Maybe a Chicagoland member could help.

Going back into the late 50s and early 60s, I used to live in Chicago, NW side, and fell in love with a car that happened to be a Cord. It was in a fenced yard on Cicero Avenue, and the lot next door was owned by the post office, formerly a Kaiser dealership. I would ride my bike a couple of miles just to look through the fence at the car, but never went on the property. Later I noticed that there was also a parts car under a tarp and still later I noticed SOLD sign on the Cord and another one was moved out of the garage. Soon they were all gone, and my hope was to find the first one I saw, a white sedan with a rear mounted spare. I've never seen another one like it, and have always wondered what became of the cars. If my memory serves me correctly the name of the owner was Hoffman. I am curious as to whether the rear spare was correct and look forward to seeing what you know, Josh

Early in 2013 I hope to print an article on the Cords with rear-mounted spares. All I can say at this time is that much of what has been written to date is not quite accurate. :)

Stay tuned.

In the 1960's I visited with Lee Sturla in Sacramento who had a 812 Phaeton with the spare on the trunk. I think it was a yellow color. Lee has died but my ACD Directory shows that a John Sturla, who lives at the same address, list a 812 Phaeton. My guess is that it is the same car.

I presume that E.L. knows the answer for at least one car. I will look into the original colour of the rear mounted spare S/C phaeton that was in Canada for quite some time. The ex-member who stripped that car to the bare metal is around but hard to reach by phone. I will give him a call.

Besides the Tom Mix car there were three other 810/812 Phaetons with rear-mounted spare tires. One was the Al Jolson car. The three other serial #'s were 1827H, 32077h, & 32127H. Does anyone know the original color of any of these or even their current colors?
