Replied by Jonathan Richards on topic CONTACTING LARRY HAMMOND OF INDIANA
Mr. Thomas of Fenton, Missouri,
The last I knew Larry Hammond and his wife Charmaine ( daughter of
the now deceased former owner of the 1930 Auburn offered for sale , Mr.
Warren Walker of Terre Haute, Indiana ) lived at or near Waveland , IN
and their phone # was Area Code 765 / 435 - 2475. I have called this
number this evening and there is a message asking that the caller leave
a message. Hope you can effect a contact with this elusive seller of what
I consider to be a remarkably sound 1930 Auburn. J. Richards in Iowa.

I am going to stick my nose where it may not belong as I am familiar with this fine older "driver restoration" car. It belonged to Mr. Hammond's late
father- in- law Warren Walker. Warren was a cabinetmaker who lived in the
town of Terre Haute, Indiana after his return from courageous service with
Gen. George Patton's armor unit in Europe up to and including the Battle
of the Bulge in December of 1944. I spoke with Mr. Walker at length on
the phone about his cars and his military service. Warren passed away in
2002 but I was able to arrange to contact his daughter Charmaine and on
the evening of 5-23-2003 I was able to inspect this Auburn in the garage
in Terre Haute, Indiana. Charmaine and her husband Larry did not at that
time wish to sell the Auburn, which limited my choice of a possible vehicle
purchase to a partially restored second series Cord C-91 Phaeton. I was
not able to arrange a suitable purchase of the Cord and parts and I am
sure it was sold long ago to someone else.
When I inspected the Auburn it was in the same garage with the Cord
and I had the impression that the black leather interior might have still
been the original but the very straight body had been repainted. The huge
wire wheels with knockoff caps were painted yellow. I believe Mr. Walker
had owned the Auburn for many years.
Although the car was not for sale when I saw it very nearly ten
years ago , it was most impressive , and you need to inspect the car and
make a reasonable offer if you want to own one of the big Auburn 8s of
the early years of the E. L. Cord empire production. J. Richards at Red Oak
