Here are some pictures of what to look for.
Mine are really hard to see and as Mike stated, don't do anything where you think they are. They will disappear real fast.
I included a shot with a tap measure. They are a little over 3/8" high on mine, not quite to 1/2" high.

My number if half covered up by the fender flange. The number is not stamped deep. If there is much rust on the frame it will be difficult to see. It could be a couple feet back from the wheel. Don't scrap the frame, you could destroy the number.
