My red speedster has now been sold and re-restored by Lcars. It now resides in California in a private museum. New paint color is a nifty grey. Engine was replaced with a "side plate" version Lycoming engine. Sorry, I have no pix of present appearance

I love your speedster you have put a lot of time and effort into it.Chris Bull p.s is the picture of that unrestored supercharger motor the one that was found under a porch or is that another one i was offerd a 1936 Auburn supercharger motor about six years ago and turned it down as at that time had no auburn parts .If only i had bought it,as it turned out the man who bought it used it to replace his 36 non supercharger motor for his sedan and i bought that one regards Chris Bull

Over the years I have accumulated many 1934-1936 engines and related parts both six and eight. It is my belief that both six and eight cylinder engines came from the factory painted what is termed 'Auburn green'.

Randy has factory literature making reference to the finish being 'Auburn green'. In discussions with Randy on this subject we have concluded that if a engine was was sent back to the factory for refurbishment the eights were painted battleship grey and the sixes were terquoise. These engines have become known as 'Dallas Winslow rebuilds' . It is my opinion that either grey or 'Auburn green is OK for 8's and terquoise or green is OK for sixes.

The lions share of people are not aware of this, so it seems best to err on the side of green.

Now the more burning question becomes, what ancillaries were painted engine color and what is black, natural or cad. For instance if an engine was sent in for rebuild, the water pump and bellhousing would not have been included. so they would still be green. This is the case of a 1934 engine that I have.

Does anyone have an oil filler tube and cap that they feel has the 'original finish?

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

The under the porch engine seems to be the traditional 851/852 Auburn green (bluish cast) that I am finding when seeking out unrestored cars to help with the restoration guidelines (you find the original color on the valve access side due to excess oil protecting paint). I have yet to find an "unrestored" car in the light grey/gray color, but I believe it was what color the engines were painted when rebuilt in Auburn by the Parts Company after 1937. There are many a car restored out there with light grey/gray engines and they did not imagine this stuff so it is coming from somewhere.

The color on the "porch" engine was a very very drab blue/green. Absolutely not the brighter green. I do not recall what was on the blower.

The auburn engine color discussion is always interesting because I believe there is no documentation one way or the other. Curt can correct me here of course. Ultimately we are relying on passed down opinions and recollections. My dad likes to point out that in this area he is the only one possessing paperwork on the subject and the blocks are supposed to be gray :D

I just saw an old factory picture of a s/c engine. The lower part of the blower was not black. It was the same color as the engine. Also, that old "porch" engine appears to have traces of green on the lower housing as well.

Just so you know the polish on the supercharger cover will most likly get a deduct, if you care about such things. So will the black water pump, chrome fan, etc. I have several things on my Auburn that are not correct but I like them so I didn't change them. I didn't like the chrome starter and gen. and did change them. I think the previous owner must have owned a chrome shop.

Here is a link to a LOT of photos that I took of Bob Bocock's Auburn Speedster that he was restoring.

Sorry for the very large photo sizes. The bottom of his supercharger housing is painted black.

Yes, that is a bright, almost irridescent green. Engine should be blue-ish green. Or grey, Al. (I was told that grey was used by a major rebuilder years ago, but your engine looks good) Nice polish on that blower cover.

I don't think there is any doubt that Duesenberg Green is not the right color for 35-36 Auburn engine.

Mark, Dallas Winslow bought the company's assets and continued providing parts and service from the former AAC headquarters (now the museum) in Auburn for years. That letter hails from Winslow's ACD Company.

Note the last line of the letter. Between my dad an my uncle Ted they owned 7 35/36 Auburns and they both swore they never saw one with Duenseberg green paint on it. I will say that the time warp engine I the paint looked grey/blue/green:

Curt Schulze found the same thing on another engine. Could be a small way for the Auburn factory to save money...

Great Looking Speedster !

I am no Auburn expert in any way~shape~or form but it would seem strange that a bare steel pan was not painted, or at least primed, at the engine factory to protect it from future rust .
Unless they expected leaking oil to protect it ! <!-- s;-) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";-)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;-) -->

Could the original oil pan have been damaged or holed by some sort of road impact &amp; later replaced by an un-painted factory service part ?

Mike: Oil pan color could also be plain steel, no paint. I have an engine that has no trace of any paint on the pan, even under many layers of gunk. It looks as though this pan was never taken off the engine over the years. Even under the pan bolts there is no trace. Just for fun, I might leave the pan plain, with a clear coat on it to keep rust away.

Curt will probably have a better answer for this but my supercharger bottom is also black. When it was time to paint the oil pan I was told there was differing opinions about the color. One group said black and one group said engine color. I had to make a decision so I chose black. Don't rely on the above information as gospel. I don't represent myself as a Auburn expert!

Mike,

The supercharger bottom housing on my 35 SC sedan was black. Not sure if that was correct. I have also seen them silver.

Mike: That was painted by Charlie Saganek. Do you think it should be silver or grey? No one has ever asked me about that. Another mystery: What should the oil pan be painted?

Also, a shot of my new cabriolet undergoing restoration.
