HOWARD A. BATES, 96, of Auburn, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at Betz Nursing Home, Auburn. Born April 8, 1910, in Camden, Mich., he was the son of the late Dr. James A. and Elizabeth (Palmer) Bates. He was an engineer for the Auburn Automobile Company from 1931 to 1936 and then worked in engineering at International Harvester of Fort Wayne for 39 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Auburn. He graduated from Tri-State University, in 1931, with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He was a 69 year member of Auburn Lions Club and was the longest serving Lion in the state of Indiana. He also was the first Auburn Lion to receive the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He was a life member of the ACD Museum and a Navistar Hero. He married Ellen M. (McNabb) Bates on May 15, 1955, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, in Auburn; she survives. Also surviving are his two sons, William A. Bates of Auburn and Robert Bates of Texas; one daughter, Nancy E. Bates of New Hartford, Conn.; one sister, Ruth Freed of Hillsdale, Mich.; and two grandchildren, Allison Bates and Ashley Bates. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Orson Bates and Dr. Morton Bates; and two sisters, Helen Carpenter and Katherine Roach. Service is 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Auburn, with visitation one hour prior to service. The Rev. Stephen Kummernuss officiating. Visitation also from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Feller & Clark Funeral Home, Auburn. Burial in Roselawn Cemetery, Auburn. Memorials to Auburn Lions Club Scholarship Fund and St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
