This may be the reason. Both filiments at the same time is too much heat in the bulb.

Thanks, That is a good point. I believe that the foot switch was bad and allowed both the bright light and driving light filiments to burn at the same time. Checking this out right now.

You can connect a 6V bulb with positive and negative terminal of a 6V battery and it should not burn out. This means you can use the bulb like a fuse and it should not burn out.
Take a Voltmeter, is your battery really 6V?

Curt: Parking lites are ok. Main headlight fillament is burned. I'm thinking the headlights were acting as a fuse. The switch fuse may have been too heavy-duty. Fuse is now burned out after I kept turning switch off & on. Gotta be a short somewhere, so I'll keep testing the system. Thanks

Are both the high and low beams burned out? How about the parking lights?

I have a serious problem with my Auburn headlites. The other day, I switched on the lights while the car was not running. The headlights came on unusually bright and then both bulbs burned out. This is a standard 6 volt system with a newer Interstate 6 volt battery. (Tail lights are ok)
I can only guess that there is something wrong inside one of the headlight buckets, but not sure. I'm hoping there is someone out there that might point me in the right direction...
