That's gorgeous.

If she decides not to keep it donate it to the ACD Museum. Would be a neat little artifact for their display cases!

Update:

The race has been run, and the Speedster did well! She finished near the top on the track, getting eliminated in the 8th round out of ten rounds. It really came on strong just before the finish line, some times passing cars just before the stripe. The Auburn really looked great going down the track, it was so fun to watch. :D

In the judging, she took first place! I think the timeless lines of the speedster are pretty tough to beat.

Thanks for all the support fellow ADC lovers!

It's done!
The axels are all polished, the wheels are trued up and lubed, it weighs 5.00 ounces. Tonight is the practice, time will tell how it runs!

The Auburn design is such a classic beauty!

When you polish the axels pay close attention to the inside of the head that contacts the wheel to remove the roughness that is usually there when the head is formed. Never saw wheels like that before! Good luck! :roll :D :

Well, we made some progress this week. We only have tommorrow to finish it because practice is friday night and the race is saturday. No time to add lights or steering wheel. Maybe the sidemounts will make it. We decided to paint the body white, then mask off the stripes, paint the blue, the peel off the masking to reveal the stripes. I hope it works :P

Here are some progess pics:

Pouring lead to ge tthe weight to exactly 5.00 oz.

Getting some color onto the chassis

Mocked up again to see how it looks with some paint on it.

Tommorrow we finish the paint and polish the axles, then final assemble it as soon as the paint is dry. Wish us luck! :)

Hi Joel,

Looks like your daughter Tess, might have a future of an automobile designer in her future. Let us now how the Auburn 'performs' in the race.

CORDially,

Al Hatch

Thanks for all the replies! I think that in the past, there was something in the rules about no non wood parts. I didn't see that in there this year. We have never put fenders on a pinecar before, so this is a first for us. I think they really help the looks. I will post more pics when we get some more substantial progress.

Joel, you were very ambitious to put fenders and running boards on your pinewood derby. It looks great.

Here's a simpler idea for next year: One of two Auburn child's cars still known to exist.

A little graphite powder on the axle helps. Also, when I was a kid (50+ years ago), I was disqualified for having an exhaust pipe that was not made of wood even though my car was by far the fastest. I don't know if the rules still require all parts to be wood, but beware of the wire windshield frame. Good luck!

May I suggest the following:

1) Add weights right up to the legal limit.
2) Put your axles (nails) into a high speed drill and polish them with emery cloth
3) Adjust one wheel where it is very slightly off the ground. Pinewood derby cars run faster on three wheels.
4) Sand your plastic wheels outer circumference till they roll very smoothly.

I won my share of races over the years, however none of mine looked as good as yours!

I suggest scribing the painted body carefully with a sharp pin, or something like it, to let the natural wood color be your pinstripe.

Oh, and nice work by the way!

Pinecar Derby Auburn was created by Joel
Tess, my 13 year old, decided that her car for the Pinecar Derby this year will be an Auburn Speedster. :P Obviously, she has very good taste! :D

We started on it last night, then put in a few hours today. She did all the cutting and shaping, with very close guidance from me, except for the cockpit which I cut out on the Bridgeport. She formed the windshield frame from a cotter pin.
This is her 7th year of making Pinecars, so she is getting pretty good at it. Here are a couple pictures of it mocked up, with plenty of adjusting and sanding left to do. The derby is coming up on saturday morning, so it probably won't get as detailed as we would like due to time constraints. She wants to pinstripe it just like the real car, does anyone have an idea how to make nice miniature pinstripes?
Also, any speed secrects to help make the speedster speedy would be appreciated!

Joel
