I think the angle "stretches" the wall and plays tricks with our eyes. When I was there the "Condiment Cord" (my affectionate nickname for the mustard yellow and ketchup red Cord Speedster) was parked along that wall and fit neatly.

The photo is shot at an angle. I can count three columns but there seems like a lot of wall behind the L29. I scanned as best as possible, it is from an ACD brochure.

That's the original staircase. It has never been "missing". Maybe the picture showed a different angle.

Was the beautiful, iron railed, wide staircase in the video, which leads to the second floor of the ACD museum, in the original showroom?

It is an impressive architectural feature.

I was shocked when it seemed missing in an old photo of the showroom that was published in the thirties.

Could it have been added during the 1970?s restoration?

If the staircase is new, they did a worthy job!

While Cruising the internet the other day I ran across a really neat ACD video. It touches on the history of the Auburn Automobile Co, E.L. Cord and the openning of the ACD Museum. The website, WheelsTV, has over 600 short web videos available. It is a Cool site! You might want to check it out. here is a link that should take you to the ACD video.
