Response from Bill, the owner of Diamondback Classics:

[i:1m5fi8sy]Your tires look terrible and, unfortunately I don't have an answer for you on why this has occurred. I will have replacements to you within 10 days. Leaching of the chemicals from the tire's black would discolor the entire sidewall and not just the outside edge. I am at a loss. Lab analysis of the old tires will help.

How many tires do you have with this problem? Let me know asap so that I can begin building the replacements.

Let's replace them all five tires. The beauty bar is $10 per tire making the total $50. The tires will be to you in 10 days. Again, I apologize for the inconvience!

Once the replacement tires are on the car and you are ready to send back the old tires, just call me or send me an email. I will either mail or issue UPS call tags and they will come get the old tires when you are ready. Easy as that! I have an American Express on file for you. Would you like for me to charge the beauty bar to that?[/i:1m5fi8sy]

Sounds like they are standing behind their tires. No charge for shipping either way. I wanted the Beauty Bars on my tires so now I can get them. I would have had to pay for mounting the new tires anyway, so I am not out anything. Kudos to Diamondback Classics for immediately addressing the problem. No questions asked. These things do happen. It's nice to have a manufacturer resolving the problem so painlessly!

Does Coker require that you put radial tubes in them? As far as I know, these are the only radials that use tubes.

Coker radials had some problems at the beginning, but I'm sure we would all like to hear more about your experiences. What size are they? How wide is the whitewall? Do they require tubes? And have you driven them long distances at highway speeds?

Thanks much!

I put a set of wide whites radials on my 41 caddy from coker tire about 6 years ago they are still like new, no browning, the white wall seems to be like a vinyl not rubber coker may be a better place to get these tires thanks Tom Dudley

Henry, what has changed is that the tires you describe were [i:2byr4xba]made[/i:2byr4xba] as whitewalls. If you cut them up you would find that the white rubber is quite thick, and actually a structural part of the sidewall.

Diamond Backs are made by scuffing off the raised lettering of a blackwall tire, then applying white rubber and vulcanizing it. The rubber coating is comparatively thin. Vulcanization makes it cling tightly --- I haven't heard reports of the whitewall separating from the tire. But clearly there is a problem of the carbon black bleeding through the white rubber. Diamond Back now talks about a new process involving three layers in the whitewall to solve this problem, but only time will tell.

In the meantime, as everyone says, even full replacement costs us $400-500 !

Have found that the tire gloss sprays turn my (non-ACD) daily driver's blackwall tires slightly brown after a while; No telling what effect it could have on the WWWs. (Am willing to bet you guys are all using this stuff?)

If you want DUB/Pebble Beach/Show Car tires try brake fluid rubbed on with a towel, and it's actually good for the rubber, at least in theory. Haven't tried it on the white wall ever for fear of some kind of saturation effect that could cause absorption of road dust or atmospheric breathing.

I use Comet cleanser on the WWWs but always worry about wheel bead corrosion that might be occurring because of the alkalinity of the cleanser.
Anybody out there with Firestone Gum Dipped or Goodyears that are a few years old?

You guys are spooking me ! I'm approaching the time to get new tires? My Bedfords are thirty years old & nice & white;the black is getting cracks though. I have used Ajax on them as necessary. I put Firestone Delux Champions on what is now Joe Bortz's SC cabriolet in 1955 & they still look good & he refuses to change them! Hardy Hearn's SC phaeton ,until recently, had US Royals that Stu Seitsma put on it in 1950. What has changed?

I find the bleach to work also. I just got a booklet from Diamond saying not to use it because it will dry out the white wall. Don,t feel your the only one. I bought my new tires from Universal and they turned brown too. And now after two years the white wall is starting to check, and they say send them back and we will replace. Again cost of demounting shipping remounting balance etc.

Use white wall tire bleach from KMart this works the best for brown whites.

This is what Hagerty says about brown whitewalls. They say scrub the tires with Ajax and that will fix it. Will let you know.

Even if they tell me to send them back, I am out a lot of money for shipping and dismounting/mounting the tires. It could be as much as $400.00 even if they do swap them out.

I had one of the first set that Diamond Back offered and complained about the same problem about one year later. They said to return them and they would replace them. The new ones are doing the same thing because the whitewall is added later and the black rubber bleeds through.

Probably because they are like many members of our Club...they are full of..........

Sorry I couldn't help myself.

My old tires did the same thing. I found if I let them go for a while they faded to a nice shade of Palm Beach Tan to match my car.

My tires were white when I brought my Cord to Auburn last August. But now they are turning brown around the edges. I bought these from Diamondback Classics about a year ago. These tires were never stacked per their instructions.

I thought Diamondback tires were supposed to be pretty good.
