Hi Chris,

The fantasy bids are fun, how about doing another one?

There are some Duesenbergs coming up for auction in August.

RM has a Murphy roadster and a dual cowl at Monterey

I think the Bohman & Schwartz SJ speedster is up for auction sometime soon also. That might be a good one to do, the bidding should go nuts on it.

J-118 Bohman & Schwartz Berline will also be at Monterey but not sure if its at auction or just for sale.

NOT SOLD at a high bid of $675,000. The high bidder was on the floor on-site at the auction.

This was $175,000 below the lowest Fantasy Bid, which came from the winner of the Hearty Handshake...

RUSS VAN IDERSTINE.

Congratulations, Russ.

Apparently we thought a lot higher of this car than the real bidders did. In my opinion, if the car had sold at the high bid, the new owner would have had a whopper of a deal.

This may go to a foreign buyer for 2.24. The favorable foreign currency exchange may influence this fine examples value.

I like it but I think it needs a fabric boot over the folded top. It looks a little rumpled without something covering the stack of fabric back there.

I actually like the top, still being visible when it is down. The car still has real style.

That non-disappearing top isn't doing it any favors, is it?

There are some players on this market to whom money is no object. If they want it, they can get it, regardless of cost. I believe that this is why we have seen astronomical prices on the most desirable cars. The numbers matching original body cars, the impeccably restored, the ultra rare body styles, factory superchargers, noteworthy cars and those with famous past owners. J-395/2414 is a car that is in this category.
From the information that I have on J-132/2154, I doubt that the big dollar guys will be chasing it. Non- disappearing top Murphy CC, body swapped, 50 year old restoration, not supercharged, not famous. A car that most of us would trade our 1st born for, but not a car that will be chased by megabucks.
I guess $913,000.00

I'll say $1,475,000. I agree this one will be a tough call among knowledgeable Duesenberg folks . . . but among the speculators, who knows?

Haven't done one of these in a while, and I think I've found one that might be a little more challenging than the usual...

www.rmauctions.com/FeatureCars.c ... CarID=r131

The car is J-132/2154, a Model J Murphy Convertible Coupe. Originally the chassis carried a Derham Sedan body, and was first known to be owned by William Schmidt, a Chicago undertaker who had numerous mob connections. A farmer in Indiana later converted the car into a pickup truck, which is how it was found in 1957 by legendary Duesenberg collector Homer Fitterling.

The car was purchased by Keith Brown, who removed the remains of the Derham body and replaced it with the current Murphy Convertible Coupe body (#830), which came off car J-144/2175. The rear fenders and the unique triangular hood screens came off other cars. The finished restoration was sold to Fitterling.

Ed Weaver purchased the car from Fitterling. Later owners have included Bob Dean of Louisiana and Ross McEachran of Canada.

THE CHALLENGE
This is a complete Duesenberg, rebodied but using an original Model J body, which makes it a bit rarer and more difficult to judge than the standard rebodied cars. Also, with the huge price RM got for (the impeccably restored and totally numbers-matching) Murphy CC J-395/2414 a few months ago, who knows where the market has gone?

You have until 12 A.M. midnight on August 2, 2008, Eastern Daylight time, to guess the correct sale price, including 10% buyer's premium.

The winner is whoever matches, or gets the closest to, the final bid. The prize is, of course, a hearty handshake.

Good luck to all.

(And no bidding in Vietnamese currency. That means you, D.J. :P )
