The engine may have been renumbered "J-560," or may still be using the original bell-housing. I have never seen the car in person so sadly I don't know.

Chris,
so it is currently J-521/2585 (already since the 1950s)? - it is interesting that all articles that I?ve read about it still designate it as J-560/2585

I have heard a lot of Duesenbergs run as well. NONE of them were "whisper quiet".

Most all Duesenbergs were capable of that 'throaty' sound. If you move that muffler by-pass lever on the floor all our duesenbergs will get growly, except for the ones that have be dis-connected. Next time you're around a quiet Duesenberg check the exhaust pipe and you will see it is only running of one of those dual pipes. The other pipe is for the by-pass.

Why would you want a quiet Duesenberg, anyway? That engine beautiful when it is a little fiesty.

It was nice to see you at Pebble, Randy.

I'm referring to the black car, "the star," which Gable owned.

Sorry, you've got me as to what car appears at 1:20. It looks like a Murphy Convertible Coupe with fender skirts but that's as much as I can offer.

Hi Chris,

Are we talking about the car that is being driven in the movie clip or the one I was asking about that is parked, visible at frame 1:20 - the parked light color Duesenberg convertible with the chrome wheels and skirted front fenders is the one I am inquiring about visible here in this screen shot:

Best Regards,

Brian

Sorry--it was originally a 1935 JN, engine J-560 with chassis 2585 and a Rollston Convertible Coupe body, which was delivered by Gable unfinished to Bohman & Schwartz for heavy modifications. The car was at Pebble Beach this year, owned by the Manns of NJ and re-restored in all-over cream.

Hi all,

I watched the clip and was amazed to see the horrible way in which that car was treated - the grinding gears and then the crash - I'd be livid if I were Clark Gable.

Also, why does that car sound so horrible when it runs - I've heard many Duesenberg engines running, they should be whisper quiet - NONE have sounded so horrible, was the car built with special muffler baffles for that throaty sound?

I also noticed that if you pause that clip at 1:20 - you can see another Duesenberg roadster parked along the road - I'm not sure which car it is but it looks like a Rollston bodied disappearing top roadster, possibly a '34?

Maybe Rangy can comment on this.

Thanks,

Brian

There's a still photo from "Merrily We Live" in the book "Fit for the Chase: Cars and the Movies" by Raymond Lee. The photo shows Contance Bennett, Jimmy Stewart and a front view of the Duesenberg.

The book has a lot of cool photos in it, but the cars aren't always identified correctly. Inside, there's also a rarely seen photo taken from the driver's side of the Duesenberg attributed to Frank Morgan.

I'm also surprised no one has mentioned the other Duesenberg in the "Merrily We Live" video clip. In the brief moment it's visible, it looks like a Murphy convertible coupe with skirted fenders.

A list of "Duesenberg Cars in the Movies" in my files lists "Merrily We Go Along" as having "Duesenberg Model J--(Gable's Car)."

Doesn't match up with the facts as I (thought I) knew them but...hmm...

We're still trying to pin down the exact identity of the car. It's been suggested that it's J-560, Clark Gable's car, before Bohman & Schwartz modifications; but I was under the impression that the car was delivered to B&S "in-the-white," NOT FINISHED by Rollston. Also, Gable's car in the period was cream with normal Duesy headlights, and he didn't sell it until after Carole Lombard died in 1942, so that it wouldn't have modified into this form by 1938.

The car does, however, have the Gable car's double rear spares.

Several other features do not match up with the Nethercutt Collection's J-533 (running boards, windshield frame).

Perhaps Randy Ema or someone else can clear this up.

It will on TCM on February 12th. I am going to DVR it. Supposed to be one of the funniest movies of the golden era, was nominated for four or five Oscars.

Youtube's Duesy clip is great. I recognize Constance Bennett, what a beauty! You don't see many 37 Ford Woodies either. Any idea which movie that is clip is from. Looks like a great screwball comedy!

Well, I found another one. I've been asked to do digital marketing for the Keels and Wheels Concours in Seabrook, TX. After I loaded my video and was checking my tags, guess what I found?? This one is great!

Also take a look at the one for Keels and Wheels (and rate it five stars please :) )
