Abandoned building in NM along 60

Herd that posed for us along the way

One from a vary large Array Radio Telescope near Datil, NM. There were about 30 of these.

Mike had to drain the water again last night. It was forecasting a low of 33˚. We drove all morning with the top up and the side curtains on, driving west on highway 60 through NM. We saw several abandoned buildings and are beginning to travel through the mountains. It was a cold day. At noon, we stopped for lunch, and Mike decided to change the oil in the car while I went to Walmart. The sun came out and we decided to take the top down before continuing west. What a view! We stopped for the night is Quemann, NM. I checked the forecast for tonight, low of 22˚, so Mike drained the radiator again.

Mike on the Rabbit at Joseph City, AZ

Our big decision this morning was which way to go. We went north on secondary roads until noon when we got on 40 (Route 66) at Sanders, AZ and continued west to Williams, AZ. We chose this route because of the weather. The forecast was 99˚ for Phoenix or possibly below freezing tonight for any of the high country to the west or north. This part of the country on the secondary roads is very desolate, we did not see more than 2 cars all morning until we got on 40. We have been to the Grand Canyon and to Prescott and opted not to revisit them on this trip.

I would like to commend both of you for not only spending the time with each other in a small car on a very long trip. I also would like to thank you for posting these photos to the web in near real-time.

I too, feel like I am along for the ride. I know you have been taking a lot of pictures, but the ones you do post really tell a great story.

I can't wait to see the rest of the trip!

CORDially,

Bill Hummel

Is the rabbit at the Jackrabbit Trading Post? Their yellow signs with the black rabbit silhouette used to be found all over the country, with the mileage. I once saw one at the New Jersey exit from the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC!
