How to loss money on a L-29. Car was sold for charity at 2017 Barret Jackson for 300K. Sold for 83,500 at Apple, and sold again at Jackson for 55K. Who made the money, Barret Jackson, of course.

So $50 hammer = $46,000 net, less $1,000 entry fee, less $1000 or so shipping, less repairs, = OUCH!

Lot 1100 - 1930 CORD L29 BROUGHAM

Friday - January 17, 2020
$55,000.00 * No Reserve Scottsdale 2020
The Cord L29 was one of the most distinctive cars ever produced, thanks to the extra-long hood necessitated by the straight-8 engine and front-wheel-drive system. 3-speed manual transmission mated to a 299ci straight-8 Lycoming engine.

Here is the link for the prior sale of 83,700 appletowing.hibid.com/lot/60432-185288-4...-cord-l-29-brougham/ - he bought from Apple Auctioneering Co, Woodland CA ( Saturday 10-26-2019 near Sacramento) in an IRS sale . The fellow who got into trouble with the IRS though paid well over 100K, but sounds like he was using other peoples money and not in a good way (easy to pay big bucks under possibly sketchy circumstances).

Thank you guys. I appreciate the input. I was waiting for some more ideas on price, before calling my friend and seeing what he thinks. I do have some more interior pics that I will be posting. I will ask him if he has no trouble in me sharing the chassis number.
Thanks again,
Victor

If you have time, please post more detailed interior photos. I would say carpets have been replaced, but either interior is original or someone replaced portions of side panels (seats look original) and integrated back in the original cording - very nice though any way about it.

I would say your 55 - 65K realistic and if you spend the proper time to research, photograph, and accurately describe then perhaps more (but probably not over that 75K mark that Mike references). The mexico location will be an issue for many people (as would any location outside of the United States) and people here expect a discount for such. Also, you certainly could clean up car more and try to auction if through one of the auction houses that caters to 30' cars (not one that specializes in Muscle cars or ... - this week has proven to be a "not good" for cars 30's cars being sold via wrong venue). I would say via such as significantcars.com that it would not stay around too long as realistically priced ones seem to find buyers quickly.

The car looks pretty complete and not many unauthentic parts from what the pictures show. It is probably a early car with no lighter , map light, bosses taped in engine compartment for battery tray and four bladed fan. The prices of old car in general are down including L-29 Cords. A couple Cab. have sold lately for in the 75K area although they needed some work. Your idea of 55K to 65K is probably in the ball park. Remember do your research, this is just one persons opinion.

Hi Jonathan, I had to look" cognoscente" up just to make sure you weren't calling me a pernicious name.

What a beautiful example of a Cord Front Wheel Drive Model L-29. This set of pictures should generate well considered estimations as to valuation , both for your friend the seller and yourself. The old saw that a fair price is what a willing buyer will pay to a willing seller is OK , BUT when it comes to a jewel such as this it is anybodies guess. Could you share with us the serial and engine numbers from this machine. Thanks so much for posting this question and wonderful photo images on our ACD Club website. This will really excite the L-29 group. I hope we will hear from Mike Huffman , Dick Green , John Bools and the other L-29 cognoscente. Stay tuned.

That's it for pics...

Any help as to venturing into guessing what a reasonable value for both seller and buyer would be?

I would be very grateful.

Hi guys:

I need a bit of help : A friend of mine is going to sell a 1929 Cord L-29 Sedan (not a Brougham but a regular sedan).

The car is in Mexico and was sold down here originally by the local distributor for the company. It has an interesting story: the original owner, who valued it very much, at some point literally built a wall around it and the car was kept that way for years. Eventually, once the original owner died, the car was sold and bought by my friend's father. Apparently, it has around 35,000 original miles, and he thinks upholstery is still original. The car was serviced and repainted (or lightly restored) about 10-15 years ago, but has not even been started for the past 6 years. It rode fine before that. It is a very dark blue, with black wheels and tan interior, done to a good standard, except for the electrical system which would need to be replaced for a proper one.

If I consult price guides, I find prices rather high, over $100,000 which surprises me as I find really very few sales of sedans as to determine values properly, and the few I have seen for sale, older restorations or users, seem to go for around $55k to $65k. My friend's car would not be a #1 car, but more of a #2 or perhaps even a #3, given the condition that it is in, that it surely needs a bit of work and hasn't been used for some time.

What I am trying to determine, is: What would a reasonable value be, for both buyer and seller? I want to get a fair value for both parts, and if that works for both of us, I would love to purchase the car from my friend.

So, that is why I need some expert advice... any ideas on what a fair value for both parts be? I am attaching a few pics when the car was at another friend's museum and recent ones (you will see the rather dusty engine compartment, compared to the older pics).

Thanks for any help,
Victor
