If the wheel turns easily then I'm in good shape! If the nut turns easily I invent new words.

You might be able to rent a 3/4 drive torque wrench from a rental yard too. Calling costs nothing. Just a note about sockets for this particular job. But an impact socket. Check EBAY for the brand JH Williams or Proto. Williams is a great oil field tool used all the time in the steam generation plants.

Just talked to my buddy, he has a torque wrench that goes to 250, and the nut is at least that tight, probably more, so sounds like we're in the ball park..thanks dc

Thanks very much! We're in the process of getting my car back together, as I've told you it was very neglected for a long time, although it ran and drove, there were a lot of issues....

HI David. The axle nut should be tightened to 300 ft-lbs. Since most of us don't have that big of a torque wrench I was once told to do it this way - get at least a 3' cheater on the end of your wrench and tighten it until it really squeels!

SAFETY WARNING - This is not the place to use cheap Harbor Freight or flea market 3/4" drive socket set or a crescent wrench. Get a good socket and breaker bar!
Earlier this week I grabbed my cheap socket and breaker bar (I was being lazy and thought the nut was loose) and broke the socket and was no where near the required torque! For this job I have a socket welded onto a 3' piece of 1 1/2" solid steel bar. yes it is very heavy but it has never bent or broke!

I know this is a simplistic question, the nuts that hold the brake drum to the front drive shafts, to what torque should they be tightened? Thanks David Coco Winchester Va.
