Maybe use a silicon / wax remover. That's usually pretty safe for paint.

The parts cleaner brake cleaner I use will take off paint. Beware. 3M makes a adhesive remover. I would try that, never had it take off paint.

I used a NAPA product specifically made for adhesive material removal along with plastic razor blades for some thick deposits to solve exactly the same problem, trying first in unseen area to make sure it doesn't degrade the paint is essential step to use.

Try either alcohol or brakeclean but do it on an area out of direct view. These suggestions are completely dependent on the type of paint you have.

The former owner of my car applied too much glue when installing the weatherstriping. Splotches of thin brown stuff oozed from under the rubber. I want to clean this stuff off without damaging the paint and existing weatherstriping. I'm open to your ideas.
