Yes, you can move the glass tube down slightly. The factory did this to make the hot Cords look better to the owners. The unit or bulb in the cylinder head has ether in it. The red liquid in the glass bulb has a long wordy name plus the red dye.

Temperature Gauge, can it be calibrated? was created by Aris Loumidis
Some years back, I had my broken temp gauge repaired. It works, but shoes much higher temperature than the actual one in the water of the radiator.

I have made up the below plackard, which I keep in the glove compartment, and my heart goes back to normal, whenever I have to refer to it.

GAUGE SHOWS ACTUAL TEMP
Faren. Celcius Faren.t Celcius
212 100 188 87
200 93 178 81
190 88 168 76
170 77 152 67
Thermostat opens appr. at 180F, 82C

I know the gauge is a sealed unit with alcohol or other liquid in it, but does anyone know if I can move down the vial in the dash unit, or is there another way to adjust or calibrate it, so it shows the correct temperature?

Thank you all!
