That could be an ACD Company plate, or even more likely a later repro plate. It is the later version, with two patent numbers engraved (not die-stamped) into the plate. Whoever replaced it after the paint job used phillips-head screws --- a no-no.

Another tip. Your car uses a starter solenoid instead of the original Startix. The only problem is where it is mounted. The position it is in appears to add several feet to length of the battery and starter cables, and that ain't good. See of you can relocate it to the original Startix position, use #00 welding cable with professionally crimped (not soldered) terminals, and be sure there is another such cable from the battery ground terminal to one of the starter mounting bolts. Bet that speeds things up.

I think you listed your serial number incorrectly. I think it should be 812 31874A.

If that's the case, the car is known. It's listed in my book on page 258, last line. It was originally a supercharged Westchester (itself a rather rare car) whose original engine, FC2595, was replaced with FB375. Since the serial number plate was replaced too, the likely culprit is the ACD Company in 1960 or earlier. (They made new plates from their stock of blanks when they replaced an engine.)

As for the clearance dent for the rear fuel pump, please look again. The dent is not very large. See if you can get a photo for us of that area.

When you get home check the tag. There is more to the number --- that's why I asked for all of it. It should have 810 or 812 in the previous field, and a letter after the number you gave. Let us know.

I recently bought a 37 Westchester. I don't know a lot about these cars but love learning. Bear with me, please:

Two things exist on the car that puzzle me. I have an electric fuel pump under the tank and the original fuel pump is currently bypassed. But, the original is located on top of the block near the carburetor.

Also, the toe in the firewall area has no indentation where a fuel pump at the lower block would be located.

Is this configuration commensurate to a 37? I have heard that all 37's had the lower fuel pumps and the modified fire wall.

Thanks for your advice.
